Not even talking about the seating capacity, because I get that Tennessee isn't exactly a storied program, so it makes sense that they are waiting to see how sustainable it is before pushing capacity up to 8K or above.

But for all the shitposting back and forth about the tiny dimensions, is there a specific reason for why it's so small. Based on google maps, it doesn't appear to be a case like Vandy or Auburn where they had to make a short porch because of lack of space.

I'm sure this will turn into a shitposting thread, but before we get to that, is there actually some history as to why the dimensions are what they are?

Historically insignificant program & lack of space on campus. The geography of UT's campus is an obstacle.

Victor Ashe's biggest blunder as Mayor of Knoxville in the early 00s was opting for a convention center instead of building a new stadium for the Tennessee Smokies at World's Fair Park. This would have been a better use of that space with a great downtown venue for the Smokies as well as UT baseball to share.

Looking on google maps, it seems like they have the space to at the very least have more conventional dimensions.

It's constrained by the railroad tracks behind the fence. This severely limits parking on that part of campus. Parking in general on UT's campus is a pain in the arse.

Sure, but is there really a need to have Todd Helton Dr. exist and push right up against the outfield like that?

Smokies did well in Kodak, it worked out good for them, they are coming back to Knoxville now that the Cherokee are turning that exit into the mother of all traffic jams.

Unfortunately with the rail yard right there, getting rid of Todd Helton would mess with easy traverse and multiple access paths through there.

I remember him as being tall and skinny. He was a great TV guy for football. I hate you younger folks missed him.

Home runs sell tickets and make for an interesting game. And when you recruit and develop above average pitching it becomes an advantage. Add in that space is a premium and you have a fun park that gives up 10 feet to some stadiums.

I don't know the stats on it, but if it is a hitter's park I would think some pitchers may not want to pitch there as a home park.

Because LSU can’t beat the VOLS there, that’s why.

Surprised nobody mentioned how small Clemson field was. 310 down left field and I think 380 to center. It seemed like every base hit got to the wall there. I thought Tennessee ball park was small, but damn. 310 is a joke.

Coach V and NIL get enough pitching to make it work. That’s been a hallmark since he got there.

So his hallmark is pitching in a hitter's park? I'm not arguing with you, it just seems like you would want a pitcher's park.

Nah, I can see the point. Small field makes your offense potent with average players, and good pitching contains the opponents. Then when you go on the road, the pitchers become dominant, and opposing pitchers are leery of throwing meatballs to guys with great stats. The better analytics today help defeat that, but not every team has the resources to scout and plot where every base hit goes and where it would be in a big park.

UT Campus is land-locked so all space is at a premium. Stadium is small but it's pretty cool the way it sits on campus.
