Moo U fans, how do you feel about Zach Arnett?

I think it’s gonna be rough for the Bulldogs myself.

Recruiting started slow but it's starting to pick up. I love the OC he hired from App State. Zach is a straight up, no bullshite guy who is very defensively minded. I think our offense may surprise some people. It was dogshit last year against quality defenses.

I hope he does well, but it's going to be a tough road. Being a young, new HC in the SEC is probably not the best place to start your HC career.
At 36, this guy is jumping straight into deep waters with no previous HC experience. He may surprise me, but being a minnow in the shark-invested SEC West is probably not the best starting point for your HC career.

Long term I think looks good. Short term, I expect some bumps in the road. I absolutely think we made the right decision to make him HC.
But like any first time HC, there will be some growing pains. I know we are picked last in the SEC this year which is fine. But we may be a bit better than people expect.
I am excited about the program but certainly cautious with respect to what our record might be this year. I will always appreciate Coach Leach for what he did with our football program and he left it (albeit prematurely) better than he found it.

Based on absolutely nothing but gut feeling I think the Arnett will end up being a bust. Something resembling the Croom years wouldn’t shock me.
On the other hand, State gets picked last every other year and ends up in a going to a mid level bowl game. Just hard to imagine a rookie head coach can keep up the level of success of Mullen and Leach, who both seemed perfect for State’s talent level.

I actually think he will surprise some people.
Long term with recruiting and maintaining success I’m unsure but I don’t think he tanks us this season. We have a pretty veteran team particularly on offense with what I think is a decent OC hire.
I could see a Joe Moorhead type scenario where he inherits talent and wins 8 games but then things go downhill the next year. But he may end up being fine. Who knows

I pretty much never interject myself in threads about MSU outside the OM board, but here goes once I suppose. Where do you see 8 wins on the 2023 MSU schedule? I see six at best and that includes over OM which surely to goodness won't be so woefully unprepared by a distracted Kiffin like last year.

I think the offense will keep some elements of the air raid (at least this year) but we will definitely run the ball more. While Rogers is not a mobile QB he has a high IQ as a QB so I think he will be fine. Arnett was going to be a HC somewhere soon so he is getting his opportunity a bit earlier than expected.
And how that goes is a total unknown. He could be a bust or great or most likely somewhere in between. I think he will be better than Morehead but how he will compare to McKeen, Tyler, Sherrill, Mullen or Leach remains to be determined.

The 4 OOC games should be wins.
Then mark Bama as a loss.
The other 7 games can all almost be toss up games.
LSU-underdog but at home the game is winnable but most likely will be a loss.
KY-home should be a win.
Then a bunch of toss up games: Auburn, OM, A&M, SC, Arky.
I will be pleased with 6 wins but it is possible we might win only 5 or possibly 7-8 games.
Last year I think we were predicted to win 5-6 games and won 9. Obviously every year takes on its own traits.
We will see how this year unfolds.

we did what we had to do given the circumstances surrounding the hire of ZA. as far as how its gonna play out, I expect our defense to be tough to score on and i am hopeful the offense picks things up. i am kina in the wait and see mode, but he needs to show some life on offense for this to be a successful tenure.

4 non conference games
4 out of South Carolina, Arkansas, Auburn, Kentucky, Aggie and Ole Miss.
Auburn still has no QB. Kentucky lost a good bit. USCe will be decent but bearable. OM is always a tossup. We have been good lately against Aggie and Arkansas
7-5 and a bowl win or even 8-4 plus a bowl is not far fetched. We return a lot of production on offense and have a lot of talent in the front 7 on defense. Pass D will be suspect though we lost a lot there

The man has spoken and said State will go no less than 9-3. In Rosebowl we trust

6-6 because of first year coach.
7-5 or 8-4 if things go right.

If he makes a bowl game and keeps that streak going then I’ll be happy this year. I think he’s a good coach and has a lot of potential. Just has to go through the learning curve and in the SEC that’s one hell of a curve.

Arnett is a new head coach, but he is not new to MSU. He was our DC, and our new DC was a defensive coach under Arnett, so there's no reason to think the defense will be worse in 2023.
The learning curve will be with the offense. However, in 2022 State was 8th in the SEC in yards and points, so it's not like we are replacing a juggernaut.
State returns as many offensive starters as anyone, so we will have experience, and hopefully they will be better able to pick up the new offense. The players seem to like it.
