In a breakout season-opening weekend for the Missouri baseball team, freshman pitcher Sam Horn — yes, that Sam Horn — made his collegiate baseball debut with three impressive scoreless innings of relief Sunday night in the Tigers’ 9-8 comeback win over Texas Christian.
quote:
He finished with three strikeouts, two walks and allowed two hits while hitting 97 mph on the in-house radar. In his first college inning of action, Horn retired the Horned Frogs with back-to-back three-pitch strikeouts in the fifth.

Well, at least Mizzou got a good pitcher out of the deal. No telling if he'll ever see the gridiron.

Connor Noland quit football for baseball at Ark after his freshman year, was a 4 star QB recruit and the backup. Ended up being an ace and getting drafted in the 9th round last year.
Be interesting to see how the rest of his baseball season goes and he may have a decision to make.

He’s nasty on the mound no doubt.
I’d like to see him play football, but if it’s me I’d much rather pursue baseball. Just a significantly lower risk of serious injury.

Pitchers usually look great when introduced. Let's pull back a little until there is tape on him for the opposition to study. If he's mowing them down (in the SEC) after 5-6 appearances, then he may be on to something.
Baseball is a tough game to break through. Sure Horn throws 97 mph. But I can throw a rock in PR, Cuba or Valenzuela and hit a kid who can throw 97. You really have to be special as a RHP.

That true, but it was also 97 with wicked tailing action.
Obviously there is no way to know if he’s MLB caliber, that wasn’t really my point. We don’t know if he’s NFL caliber either.

That is why he needs to stay for another full year!

I wish this could have been the headline
But glad he's making an impact in baseball.

I think he got hurt, don't know much about the extent of it.

I read where he left the game pointing to his elbow.

Saw that one tweet about it yesterday but nothing else. Does Mizzou media not cover baseball, you’d think there would be more news seeing as he’s one of the most high profile athletes on campus

Sam Horn will be limited tomorrow in practice. Drink doesn't have exact diagnosis but suffered forearm strain. He's undergone MRI and been looked at by multiple doctors.
No damage to any ligaments. He could throw the football by the weekend.

Wouldn't that be pushing it?

He’s probably not going to be pitching for awhile.
quote:
According to MU’s coach, a forearm injury like Horn’s is different for a pitcher than it is for a quarterback, meaning Horn will likely be able to begin throwing a football sooner than a baseball.
quote:
Drinkwitz deferred any definite answer on Horn’s pitching to MU baseball coach Steve Bieser, but says he doesn’t expect Horn to resume activity on the diamond very soon.
quote:
“I think (Horn) is going to have extended time off from baseball,” Drinkwitz said. “I don’t think he’ll be throwing a baseball for the next two, 2½ weeks.”
The perfect time for him to have a “forearm strain”. Now he can go to Spring Football practice the sport he wants play the most.
