Why does it feel like the 2023 season has already crashed?

There was so much optimism and promise just 2 weeks ago. A boat load of new talent moving up and coming in with a potential star QB being directed by a great offensive mind…and then Saban shat all over it.

Because you have chosen to feel that way?

I don't get people freaking out over Rees at all. Like, at all. At worst he's good but inconsistent and way too cute. At best he's what all the football people who know him say he is and is really good.

The Steele thing isn't fun. The silver lining is that he's shown that when he has good players he can put good defenses on the field. The other silver lining is all the shite we complained about (bad communication, out of position, playing scared, insane whackjob formations and blitzes) is gone. It's replaced with simple shite, which has its own issues, but different.

So, I dunno. Nothing about this is guaranteed good, and I'd be lying if I said this is "what I expected" (though having expectations for these things is kind of insane anyway given how little we know)......but I don't see how it's the end of the world.

If you told me on January 2nd we could replace BoB/Pete with these 2 or keep BoB/Pete I'd take this trade 100% of the time.

I would probably take BOB and Widespread Pete, but they sucked too.

Because you are melting like an LSU fan. Steele is better than than Golding, I don't see why anyone would argue with that. His Auburn defenses were nasty and I didn't enjoy us playing against them. Rees is a wait and see, but as long as he's not calling pad plays where everyone is running to the same spot on the field so one db can cover all our guys I'll be content

I agree with you, I think Saban is trying to get back to smash mouth football. He tried the spread and during the last two years he saw his protege take our identity and make Georgia the best team in football with black and blue football.

This is his last few years and I think he wants to get back to the physical style we used to have. Let athlete's be athlete's., We have more than anybody even Georgia. Simplify the d and smash teams on offense. We will be playing for and winning championships again.

People can make fun of these hires but our d giving up points and yards were mostly mistakes made by blown coverages, not lining up in the right gapps. Kevin Steele had auburn playing damn good d when he was their cord. He's not Kirby or Pruitt but he's better than golden imo.

If that was true he wouldn't have interviewed Grubb. The guys he hired are the best he could do.

I believe Saban has hired guys who can beat other teams when they have a decided talent advantage. I don't see either coordinator as a guy that can do less with more. Or, in other words, I don't believe either coordinator is a better tactician than the coordinators at the upper tier SEC schools.

I think it's very possible Rees could be. I'm not sure I understand the backlash towards him but guess we'll wait and see. Every football person who has broken down what Notre Dame does on film is impressed with it and thinks he'll be very good with more talented players.

On the other side, I think we decided to go with a guy who will put a consistent product on the field in Steele and agree that we won't be scheming anyone in that side. We also won't outscheme ourselves, which we've had a very bad habit of doing lately. But the Steele thing is clearly a "didn't get the big guys and now we're picking between flawed guys". And last time he did the young wunderkind thing and it blew up, so he decided it was better to have a unit that knew where to go every play at full speed while maybe giving up some tactical magic. This was not the first choice and was a lesser of two evils situation IMHO. The devil you know vs the devil you don't.

Offense is a bit of a wild card since Rees has such a brief resume, but Steele is a definite upgrade over Golding. Golding's defense were the most fundamentally unsound I've ever seen - terrible tackling, terrible alignment, tons of penalties. Golding was the worst coach at Alabama since the Ears Whitworth era.

He interviewed a few people. He hired who he thought was the best. If Saban never wins another championship for us, I will be forever indebted to him he gave me personally the best last 16 years of my Alabama fandom. I think we as fans owe him what ever hires he wants to make.
