Because Pete's krytonite is when other teams start within 60 yards of the goal line
Points Per Drive Short Field - Opponent Drive Starting within 60 yards of end zone
11. Georgia (2.60 points per drive allowed)
27. Tennessee (2.92 points per drive allowed)
69. LSU (3.59 points per drive allowed)
131. Alabama (5.64 points per drive allowed)
There are 131 teams in FBS, fyi

That’s highly embarrassing

Interesting… how many drives like that did Bama face? I wonder if they had a super small sample and thus were subject to way more variance.

Their conditioning has to be top-notch this year for all those delayed 15 yards from the line of scrimmage blitzes they’ll run.

15 times (in FBS games, FEI doesn't include vs FCS stats)
- Arkansas 3 times (10 points)
- Louisiana Monroe 1 time (7 points)
- LSU 1 time (7 points)
- Ole Miss 2 times (10 points)
- Tennessee 3 times (21 points)
- Texas 2 times (3 points)
- Texas A&M 2 times (14 points)
- Utah State 1 time (0 points)
The close SEC games, not being able to even force a FG (led alone a punt) is just unacceptable.

Over the course of 13 games I have to imagine that there were likely plenty of times a team started at its own 40 or better, at least enough to not make this some outlying stat.

LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M had 8 drives that began within 60 yards of the endzone. They scored 7 touchdowns and kicked 1 field goal on those 8 drives. That's absolutely absurd.

Can be hard to distill where a season was lost to a single failure but Pete did it

Watching the 2022 Alabama defense was like watching a drunk driver behind the wheel of an F1 car.
Every starter on that defense will play in the NFL at some point and there are likely 7-8 current or future first or early rounders (Anderson, Oatis, Young, Turner, Lawson, Kool-Aid, Ricks, Branch).
Finished dead last in defense against a short field.

I mean BoB did a poor job, but even with that the offense left the field with the lead or at the very worst tied on something like 7 straight drives to end the LSU and Tennessee games. They had 6-7 opportunities to seal both of those games and just couldn't even come close to doing it.
Specifically the LSU game, the defense spent the entire 4th Qtr and OT just giving the lead up immediately following the offense taking it. I've never seen anything like it.

Not only that, butTenn & A&M went 5 for 5. That's just unacceptable.

Thanks for pulling that. Did you go to individual game summaries is there a dataset you grabbed it from?
