Agree with this. Now suppose the runner rolls over the initial tackler without being ruled down, then reaches the ball over his head toward the goal line for the score. (Which likely would have happened but for the second tackler knocking the ball out). As I said before, the second tackler had a split second to decide a) should he hit him, and b) exactly what angle he needs to take to stop him from scoring. It’s a game of inches and the game was on the line. This wasn’t a case of taking a full series of steps to line up for a kill shot on a defenseless player. The rule is shite because it can’t differentiate.

Don't lower the crown of your head when tackling or being tackled. This is a safety issue of great importance. Tackle with your face mask up.

everything you just wrote tells me you literally never played the game
you have no idea what happens in the course of one split second on that field
zero clue, you and the Auburn guy, zero fricking clue

If it was so easy to do vs. a moving target, everyone would do it every time.

and anyone who is barely one rung above Absolute Idiot should have known this five/six years ago

oh no! the horror!
all defensive players from now on, especially on the goalline, should be more careful to not risk bruising a fellow soyboy!
if they should just let the opponent score then so be it! Football is mean and it hurts people!

No need to call that shite on a two point conversation when it would be best to end the game asap.

He didn't lower with the crown of his helmet.
It was a very unnecessary call on a two point conversation.

What was he supposed to do?
Bear hug the ball carrier until he stops going forward?

The rule is actually fairly black and white now
That is proven false every week when the “rules expert” on a football game broadcast makes a judgement on a targeting call, and then the replay office comes back with the opposite call. So no, it is still a completely human judgement call.

It was a shite call. I hate the whole targeting crap to begin with. It's a classic case of "Lets pass a meaningless rule to make it look like we are doing something that helps". It doesn't. It's just a lawyer suggested rule to try and insulate them from traumatic brain injury lawsuits. Something a lawyer can point to in front of a Judge to claim, "see we are trying to prevent this." Never mind that it has no impact on that problem whatsoever and the whole thing is a fricking feel-good sham.
But that aside you have got to give a little more leeway on a end of game all or nothing goal line tackle like that. You can't stop that guy from crossing the goal line without coming in with some authority.
Might as well break out the fricking flag belts and play flag football.

I wish it hadn't been called in that situation but I guess it was technically a penalty.

So how exactly do you dive in on a guy trying to push over the line with your shoulder that low WITHOUT lowing your head.
The above is an example of a player who's head is up, making a tackle while still driving his shoulder through the contact.
The above is an example of a player lowering his head to make a tackle, leading with the crown of his helmet rather than his facemask.
See the difference?

The guy was falling backwards and our defender in front of him- iow they weren’t going the same direction so I’m not sure your pics apply.
I’m a little more pissed because I freaking hate the replay booth, I almost wish they didn’t do it. I think it was a bs call but I swear it doesn’t matter what the replay shows we are getting screwed going back to the Auburn game years ago.
