How we feeling about this new DC?

Looking like Travis Williams from UCF may be the hire. Don’t know much about the guy, but my first instinct tells me this wasn’t Sam’s first choice. Doesn’t have a ton of experience from what I’ve seen.

Doesn't feel like he was even in our top 5 choices

Dude is a high energy recruiter that relates to players and runs the Saban/Smart/Steele/Muschamp defense.
I mean, hard to ask for much more
It’ll be interesting to see how he does here. High energy and a great attitude goes a long ways towards success.

Why?
He wasn’t one of the names floated out by the sources, but he seems to check several of the boxes you’d want checked as our DC.
Several have even said they’d like a young, hungry, up & comer as a head coach, and we have one as a DC.

His defense statistically haven’t been great so I guess Sam is leaning heavily to the recruiting angle and saying we need better dudes since our defense already sucked.

Travis Williams would rank among the top 5 best recruiters among all assistants in the SEC IMO
If nothing else, Razorbacks getting an elite recruiter to run the defense

Elite recruiter, knows the SEC as a player and coach. Young, big energy guy.
Fits what we needed. Will probably make some noise in the portal immediately.

Seems odd for Feldman to be off on his Chris Hampton prediction
Someone on Twitter mentioned a possible co-dc situation. Also wonder if some of the names leaked was by the Pittman camp to figure out where they have leaks.

He said Hampton was under heavy consideration but never said he was the guy. Might have been between him and Williams

I like it. We’re never going to be consistently elite with a shut down defense. Seems like he’ll be able to focus on being better in the red zone and creating turnovers.

I'm fine with this. Never heard of him and only know what I read here. Sounds like he's what we were wanting in a DC.
And seriously, if he flops, he won't be any worse than what we've had for most of the last decade.

I love it because I want NAM to be angry that I support Sam's work

His defenses have been excellent in the red zone and he’s a tremendous recruiter who knows the SEC. I’m in.
Just look at his commit list at Auburn:

In honesty, we should have hired someone WAY better
Am I truly disappointed in this hire? Yes, absolutely
I would have liked the Tulane guy, loved the Maryland guy, or even LB coach Lance Thompson from Maryland who did ample time with Saban at Bama
Would have been elated to get the Syracuse guy
and I wasn't fricking joking a week or so back about taking Pete Golding from Bama off their hands. They hate him, because Gump fans are fricking idiots. That would have been such a fun hire and a good hire. And so the resident 9th grade smart arse idiot on here can be served a microwaved preemptive STFU on that Golding topic
---------------
Write what you believe in because you have evidence to support what you just fricking wrote, instead of being a pussy whiner smartass

I like that Travis Williams cut his teeth as a GA under Gene Chizik at Auburn, under Ted Roof the DC, who is still considered a highly knowledgeable guy in this game.
Screw the Malzahn connection, I can't stand that guy.
Williams had a year I guess with Muschamp and that's good. And more time with Kevin Steele. Excellent.
What none of us can ever predict is some young guy who blows the world up and becomes a household name in two years. Can this young guy do that? Sure he can. So I'm All-Hog and Go Hogs Go. Do I like the guy already as a person? You bet. Do the opposite George said. Maybe the opposite line of thinking is what ends up making us run through the streets drunk with a goal post.
Looking back, the only time I've ever been excited about a Hog DC hire, it was John Thompson, and he did well enough to get the Florida job and then a HC job. Excited about Robb Smith? no. Excited about Odom? Not really. Exited about Willy Rob? No. Excited about any Nutt DC besides Thompson? No.

Odom was a step up from Chavis, hopefully this guy is a step up from Odom. I’m just glad that Sam has gotten a respectable coach who has potential to move forward.
His two hires have been impressive. We’ll see how they pan out. I’m looking forward to it.
