From the bulldogs to the pirates. Bulldogs are too generic anyhow. These things seem to happen organically, what a great time to take advantage! RIP Leach, my favorite coach of his generation and a football treasure

Pirates might not go over too well in this clown world we live in
Support though would be a cool mascot. Bulldogs is pretty lame

Pirates vs Rebels would actually be pretty cool

Keep the bulldogs. Add a swashbuckling pirate as a mascot.
No different than adding elephants, eagles, or rebel bear sharks.

Would be cool but I feel like he didn’t coach there long enough to do something like that. Maybe if he’d been there another 5 years

Well, there is only one team in CFB that should be named Bulldogs, and it's obviously UGA, so the Pirates or Swashbucklers would be a good Miss state mascot name..

If it is Leach related, he said in multiple interviews he wanted more Gorilla mascots

It would be way cooler become pirates and Jean Lafitte the French Bulldog as the mascot

At least name their Bulldog Pirate

There is actually a rich history of pirate activity all along the gulf coast that many people have never heard of. There are still likely treasures from shipwrecks to be found from the FL west coast up through the panhandle, across the northern gulf coast, and wrapping around Louisiana and the TX coast. There was a lot of pirate activity on the MS coast. So it’s actually historically accurate and fitting to use “The Pirates”.
That age pre-dates the colonial south so it’s not popular in southern US culture but it wouldn’t be unfitting to use that genre as the mascot and character for the state.
Swing your sword!!

40 years ago, I did a short stint in telemarketing sales for a small company that sold promotional spirit items for high schools. While I failed miserably...the ability to sit down in front of a phone and make money come out of it is a rare gift, and I ain't got it...I did learn that (or so I was told) the most common HS mascot nationwide is Bulldogs (MSU, Jawja, Citadel in the college ranks). I would have said Tigers is more common. Regardless, I'll vote for the Pirates.

Great minds think alike. I didn't see anything posted about it but I agree. State fans with fake swords and pirate garb would make for an amazing atmosphere. Leach gave his all for State and truly loved his team. I think it's the right thing to do.

I like the clip where he says that more programs should have Gorillas as their mascots.
