Did it take heupel 5 years to flip Tennessee around? No. How about lane? When the time comes for us to get a new coach we need to get over this shite narrative that he needs to hang around for half a decade to find out whether he’s good or not. That’s shite other teams tell you because they enjoy kicking our arse. If he’s gonna be successful you’ll know by year 3.

Well Gary Patterson had been building that team for 20 years. Had a good thing going, just couldn’t ever get past the Richt stage.
Then he had also been in the state forever, so he knew how to recruit it. I am more worried about how well they do after he gets paid this off season. Does he get fat and happy like Sam?
LSU, had 5 stars all over the field. He also didn’t figure out Harold Perkins was a game wrecker until the Ole Miss game. We had 2-3 5 star players and they all transferred in this year. And have put up numbers.
Could you imagine how bad we would be without Drew Sanders? Nudie? Landers? Haselwood? I gripe about Haselwood over using the spin button but he catches and is the leader or 2nd place on our team in yards.

After who gets paid in the off season?

Also I sincerely believe most coaches win their championships within the first 3-4 years. I think it gets to the signing of the next big contract and being fat and happy.
There has only been 4 coaches who have won championships after 5 years, that has never won one at their school.

Osborne
Mack Brown

Each of those coaches has had disappointing years also. It happens. The other teams are trying also and we do play as tough a schedule year in and year out as any team in college football.
Results totally matter. Facts do also. We are recruiting our way out of an enormous hole. Having 6 D-backs out at the same time isn't something most teams are going to overcome. Having your starting QB hurt without a serviceable backup (even though most of the armchair coaches on here were yelling for Hornsby all year...well...you got him. How'd that work for you?) doesn't help.
No excuses...we had a disappointing year regardless of how it finishes.
The real issue will be how we react to that. Do we make changes? Do we improve mental toughness?
It really doesn't make you look smarter to criticize something you can't do yourself.

At least for Pittman you can say what he brings is strength to the offensive line, and building a sustainably great offensive line takes at least a couple seasons. But by year 4, we should be about there.
If a team consistently has a top 10 level offensive line, winning gets a hell of a lot easier.
This year we had an even tougher schedule than usual, critical injuries at the position group we could least afford it (secondary), and a couple losses that could have gone the other way. I haven’t forgotten we won 9 games last year and a NYD Bowl win, which by Arkansas standards is close to top notch and that was just Sam’s second year taking over a mess of a program.

Sonny Dykes will sign a new contract in the off season.
I have said since Tennessee run, that they will give Heupel a Jimbo/Mel Tucker 10 year $100M+ contract. Then when he stinks in a year or two after all these juniors/seniors and hooker are gone, they will go full Schiano/Pruitt combined apocalypse melt down to get rid of Heupel. He will be called a necrophilic pedo or maybe… worse than Trump.

quote:I don’t think the offensive line has been near as good this year as it should be. There’s no excuse for us not being able to pound the rock in on lsu Saturday after that turnover. We should be able to run the ball 4 times for 10 yards with an o line coach as the head guy.

LSU is 10x the program we are.
TCU is about 3x and plays in a shitty conference (not that it would necessarily help us)
Awesome thread, would read again.

When the starter is playing like shite, this happens. There is every reason to think that our OC (which 75% of our fans will defend to the death) should have a 3 year guy ready to run the offense competently. Maybe not as well as the starter, but competently. The fact that he hasn't, to me, is a real good indicator of why KJ has failed to reach his potential.

I think you got those numbers flipped. 75% of our fans want him gone. Me and 1 or 2 other people are the only defenders here.
He should have a 3rd year prepared, and I think he did. He can’t make him perform. Hornsby seemed like he didn’t go through any progressions and bailed early. Look at our one touchdown. Fortin stayed in the pocket took the hit and made the throw.
What baffles me is 2 of the top offensive line minds in the game and we don’t have a line I would trust to protect the collection plate at a mega church.

Only thing I can think of is the location and stability for past 20 years.

Pittman has made his fair share of mistakes this season, and overall since coming here, honestly.
That said, he also resurrected our program from the depths of hell to at least the basement. We are going to have bad years here and there. That is just being Arkansas...no way around it.
I think Briles has been very underwhelming this year. His offense isnt bad, but you have to have a QB that have both the mental and physical attributes to run it, and they have not produced one. KJ has regressed (Injuries? Mental collapse from the A&M debacle?), Malik hasnt been developed, and Fortin doesnt have the physical attributes. Add to that we have had a ton of injuries and issues with consistency on defense.
Put all this together with a brutal schedule and you get a big letdown season. It doesnt mean Pittman is done, just that he has to learn from his mistakes and adjust. The biggest concern is that he has repeated the same mistakes more than once in his tenure; For example, he lost at Auburn in 2020 by chasing points early in the game, and he repeated the same mistake this weekend. This is what will ultimately be his downfall....He hasnt been able to make good adjustments and learn from his mistakes yet. Maybe he will, but I wont hold my breath.

We lack an absolute burner at receiver. I think he needs one to beat single coverage deep.
We also may want to look at transfer QBs that are good COLLEGE QBs and are older. Thats what's helping Georgia and Tennessee. They have grown men playing with kids.

3 11 win seasons in the last 8 years?
Soon to be 4.

So let me get this straight, we're a burner WR, a "better" o line and a NFL dual threat QB away from being able to beat Liberty, A&M and not blow the myriad of games we have this year?
Love this fanbase.
So the NFL RB, highest graded O-line in the country and 2 5 star, multiple 4 star WRs are somehow not enough to have a fairly competent offense?
Talent doesn't fix the multitude of terrible decisions that have been made this year and the total lack of preparation week in and week out.

Maybe now, but early on it was everyone wishing Odom a slow, painful death, even when it was the offense killing the defense.

Did he really look prepared to you? He looked like a third year guy who was absolutely petrified to make a mistake, because it was damn near impossible to get on the field for 3 years to me.

With you there. I think the OC should have schemed our right tackle some help, especially once it was understood that #40 was going to single-handedly win the game for LSU, but none of our linemen have looked good for 2 weeks now.

Not really that big of an accomplishment in the Texass 12. The top half of the SEC, both East and West would regularly win 10-11 in the Texass 12. Wish I could include us, but not so much.
