How UGA’s defense took Tennessee’s offense away from them

There were a lot of wrinkles, but the things that stick out to me are…
1) Took away the run game…. And we took it away with 6 players essentially.
2) Deep safeties…. Our safeties didn’t have to be tight for run support, so they were able to line up as much as 20 yards deep. We played a lot of aggressive man underneath with the protection of 2 very good deep safeties.
3) Blitzed in passing situations. Hooker didn’t have time to let his athletic receivers get open deep or on those long drags. Tight man coverage and 2 deep safeties didn’t give him the looks he is used to getting.
2 and 3 are a direct result of us being able to do 1 though. Getting a lead and UT abandoning the run because it wasn’t working played into our game plan.
Lastly, I feel like our goal in the 2nd half was to shorten the game and avoid a shootout. That worked too.

We played relatively vanilla Georgia defense and dared them to beat us man-to-man.
They could not do it.

It was not vanilla in my opinion. Lots of stunts and blitzes and safeties where they are not used to them being.

That ain’t vanilla.
That said, we got credited with 6 sacks and I could swear we had more.
Davis and Monden show as having no sacks and I am like 99% certain I saw both those guys get a sack. Am I wrong?

We got pressure when needed.
They had us beat 3x long he just didn’t connect on. Think I remember Smith chasing a tide end.
The pick by Ringo was how it should be done.
The lack of their ability to make quick adjustments helped us set our D.

UT played their part as well.Took 5 minutes off the clock to start the 2nd half and came away with nothing.
Short passes and runs consumed the entire drive.

Some of the chasing was a result of us playing physical early in the route.
These are timing shots. Typically one read for Hooker and release. Moving the receiver off his path a little bit early can make Hooker shoulder the blame when the pass is way off further downfield.
We were very physical. Even after what I call a bogus hold call on ringo, Kirby told him to keep playing physical. Hooker throws to a spot..
Not to his receivers.

I’m 100% positive Davis had one on Tennessee last possession of the game.

And, to my (admittedly foggy) recollection, he didn't connect because he had to let go too early due to pressure (real or perceived) from our front.
Never underestimate the power of disruption, especially when playing an offense that desires to create disruption of their own in order to create that separation in the secondary.

Monden’s sack was eliminated by a penalty, I think.

2) Safeties being deep caused them to have to work the sidelines deep. Not many chances in the middle. That plays into the bump coverage and makes them have to throw a well timed ball in a window.
