He hung around the Thomson football team in the 90s when I was part of the team. A great ambassador for football, well spoken and a great teacher of punting.

Football has been losing some real legends lately, biggest one so far here. Condolences for all that knew or loved him.

Ray Guy, the Hall of Fame punter who won three Super Bowl rings with the Oakland and Los Angeles Raiders over a 14-season career, has died at the age of 72, the NFL announced Thursday.

Guy, who was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and a member of the NFL's 100th Anniversary All-Time Team, averaged 42.4 yards over his career from 1973 to 1986. He led the league in the category three times, while finishing second on three other occasions.
Guy also was an expert at flipping the field, recording 209 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line.
His longest punt was a 74-yarder against the Denver Broncos in 1977.
In 1973, the Southern Miss All-American became the first punter to be selected in the first round of an NFL draft.
Sad news.
72 seems awfully young.

RIP to a freaking legend.
Kids should study this man. They have no idea the weapon a punter can be.

He kicked a ball that hit the gondola in the super dome once.

Probably the only punter in history to have a street named after him

One of the old dudes who's been around the Thomson program forever told me one time about how Ray Guy would punt the ball way over the stadium lights, back when stadium lights were on wooden poles, and the punt returner would be all fricked up and disoriented and couldn't find the ball. There was that and also the boom/thump that came off his foot when he really got into a punt. A professional punter can create a hell of a sound when their foot meets ball.

RIP. Was the legend when I was a kid. But it's very interesting that he is the only true punter in the HOF. His stats are not even top 20 for punting average.
this is a position the HOF is severely lacking in recognizing.

He was third string one season with Raiders. 1 and 2 were injured in a game. Ray started warming up and starter decided he should probably go back in. Lol

Whats crazy is how far the game has gone. 42 yard average isnt bad, but several college kids do that now. a long of 74 is impressive, but Punt God had a few of those in college. I think carolina had a kid get one more than that

IIRC, He was an All-American defensive back his senior year at USM. What an athlete!
