What’s the history behind the Bama and Tennessee rivalry?

In my lifetime Bama has dominated the series. Seems epic from Tennessee that they finally won one. Is there a history there? Does Bama consider Tennessee a rival?

Forced yearly cross-division rivals, like LSU and Florida.
Tenner was basically a yearly rent-a-win for them until this year.

An agreement between the two States has existed since 1819. They get to win every 15 years.

Yes. If by “rival” you mean easy cupcake win most years.

It’s the rivalry that built Southern football. That’s all you need to know.

I think you need to focus on getting your drivers license and finishing high school

Yep.
I'd support Bama leaving the SEC over TSIO. It's the only game that must not be removed imo.

Alabama and Tennessee are the two winningest SEC football programs. They played legendary games for many decades in the 20th century. They were the SEC's biggest, most intense rivalry. Remember that Bama and AU did not play at all for many years.

People don't believe me when I say I don't care about the Auburn game.
I wish it wasn't the last game of the season, because that gives that game far more importance than it deserves.
Hopefully the expanded playoff corrects this error.

Back before the internet, Tennessee beat them much more regularly. Especially the time between Bear and Saban.

Two games out and closing fast. May not be able to say that any more after this year if you're talking total wins.

There was a time when The Vols were relevant. It appears they have returned to relevancy. Matt Mauck single-handedly removed the Vols from the landscape back in 2000. It's good for the conference when the Vols are part of the conversation.

Fat Fulmer turned in Alabama to ncaa for violations in exchange for TN getting no consequences for doing the same violations... Led to bama getting ncaa sanctions.

While it has been played for some time, I think it got heated when Bear was at UK and then when he got to Alabama it took it up a notch

General Neyland led Tennessee from 1926-1952. During this time he compiled a 173-31-12 record while winning 4 National Championships and 5 Conference championships. He also served during WWII for 4 years serving in the China Burma theater.
During same period Alabama had Wallace Wade who coached from 1923-1930 compiling a 61-13-3 record and winning 3 National titles and 4 conference titles.
Frank Thomas came to Alabama in 1931 and stayed until 1946. Compiling a 114-21-7 record. He won 2 National titles and 5 conference titles.
We want mention Alabama from 1947 -1952 because they weren’t that good.
But you can see between these three coaches 10 National titles and 15 conference titles were won in 26 years. This is the beginning of the rivalry and why it’s so intense.
Also for the last 50+ years Vanderbilt hasn’t been any good and from 1907 to 1948 Auburn and Alabama didn’t play one another. With the few loses that these coaches had Many of these coaches loses or ties were to one another.

This and it was a gentlemanly matchup. A lot of mutual respect between the two programs. It just got more and more heated over time.
