Then why did Pickens get into UGA and not Auburn?

Every SEC university is incredibly easy to get into unless you are a Neanderthal. Let’s quit with the academics garbage baw.

That's certainly not true in FL (Bright Futures) and GA (HOPE).

Afraid not, those who know both cities are just nodding their heads. Even those GA citizens. Atlanta is the South's shithole and most of the residents know it. Even Buckhead is a scary place.

know many people who live in Atlanta now. Most want to get the frick out of there. It really isn't a joke, GA has crashed and burned the last 10 years. It starts in Atlanta, but it is bleeding over to other cities. Look who might be their next Govenor and if that happens, we in Alabama will have to build a Wall.

I have lived in Metro Atlanta my whole life, only left when I left to go to Bama. Now before you UGA fools start in with me, my whole family attended UGA and I just wanted to do something different being the youngest of 5.
I can’t wait to GTH out of here. This whole area has been taken over by Yankees and people from the west coast. Southern hospitality no longer exists in this part of GA. The traffic is a nightmare, your whole life is planned around traffic patterns.
As soon as my kids graduate from Bama, we are out of here!

Auburn's public schools are top-5 in the state of Alabama. I've heard Tuscaloosa's have gone to hell-in-a-handbasket. Like Montgomery bad.

Public school smack...from a state with abysmal education rates..gotta love it lol

Atlanta and Nashville are the two best big cities in the South (outside of the Florida cities).. And anyone who says any different is just being a homer.

I’ve enjoyed reading this thread. I’m a 36 year resident of Buckhead and have numerous family members and friends who are graduates of UGA and AU.

AU vs UGA: Honestly, other than graduates of the two schools, most people will find a debate between UGA and UA academics to be a coin flip. Most of the Country thinks of the two schools as very similar (cousins), basically nice, Southern state schools that are football crazy. GaTech being thrown into the academic mix is ridiculous sinceTech operates at a totally different academic level.

Buckhead: Buckhead, like Atlanta, has changed dramatically over the past 35+ years. It is decidedly more urban and high rise but still has the classic residential properties. The part of Buckhead that most non residents think of Lenox and Phipps Mall; the shops and restaurants along Peachtree; the Shops of Buckhead, etc. has experienced a crime surge since Mayor Bottoms attacked the Police and coddled the rioters during the George Floyd summer. For the most part the residential part where I live remains relatively safe. Moms and Dad walk with kids and dogs along my street at all hours of the day and night. Many Buckhead residents do fear that the crime will spread to the residential streets.

Finally, Woke families are now infiltrating Buckhead. These Trust Fund Moms fill their yards with the Woke signs and Abrams and Warnock political signs.

That’s my take.

Auburn is in West Georgia. Why is it surprising we move to the closest big city in our state?

I live in the Nashville metro and honestly liked it a lot better before it’s tried to become the new Atlanta. I’m sure tourists love it but not a fan personally. Rarely go to Nashville proper anymore as it’s become just another cookie cutter big city, just a big racket IMO.

Certain parts of the city you stay away from. It hasn't bled over to the rest of the city. Unlike Atlanta where no place is safe after dark.

I like playing along with teh "auburn backup school/can't get into uga" trope as much as the next guy, but you have to admit there is quite a bit of truth to it. And it's not just message board fodder, its' stuff that is quantifiable and can easily be supported with admission statistics. Look at how many AU students are from GA; I'm sure it's an extremely high number and almost certainly the most attendees from somewhere other than Alabama. You can also look at the admission entry requirements at both schools. It's not really some huge far fetched fairy tale to suggest that a good many kids (especially in gwinnett and other crowded metro areas) applied to home state UGA but didn't get in and went to AU isntead.

This is changing though:

AU acceptance rate was 43% in (2022) - avg. GPA 4.1 and avg ACT 30, this is comparable to UGA's acceptance rate.

Btw, STEM degrees are superior to Liberal Arts degrees and this is the only thing that really matters.

Georgia appreciates the AU fans. They can be found at the drive thru windows at McDonalds thru out Atlanta and the state. Without them who would hand us our fast food?

It's the other way around... lol
