Kent States Outside screen play,

I really dig that play, never seen one run so close to the sidelines. They had the big guys pull and just push the defenders out of bounds with their momentun while the wr runs back toward the outside Hash mark at an angle with a clear path.
Not a tunnel screen, Iwould call it a funnel screen.
Also loved the jump play, where the qb tried to get us to jump, then lined up in the slot and the full back lined up a qb. Funny stuff that will confuse the d.

They ran it a lot and we had a hard time with it.

Concerning. Tennessee loves that extra wide screen from what I can remember.

Glad it happened to us against kent st instead of TN. Our CB allowed himself to be tied up/controlled and was thus useless. Then, C. Smith took the wrong angle on support and the rest was history. Kirby will have this fixed.

Brought back nightmare of UF a few years ago when they ran the same play all game and we couldn’t defend it.

That play was solely on Chris smith and I'd bet he would tell you that. the whole D followed the ball and stretched the play out. CB WAS engaged in a block but if smith runs behind the defender instead of under, he either pushes that ball carrier out of bounds or back in the field toward 10 more guys. Never lose containment. We had some experienced guys making some inexperienced plays all over the field on saturday. Good thing is its never as bad or as good as it looks and I doubt you see that team show up again in 2022

Corner has contain, not the safety. Smith took a poor angle but the corner (Lassiter I think) fought inside instead of out.

True, guess im just saying I expect more of smith, playing time and all that. Not giving lassiter an out just saying with the amount of snaps smith has had, He should have noticed that he was the last line of defense and done what it took to minimize the damage since his corner couldn't get off. He's not the most flashy safety but that's normally the type of plays he makes that goes unnoticed. That was unlike him, just like the mcconkey plays.

I would agree that the CB has outside contain and the safety had fill. I think receiver made a good block and the CB lost awareness. I also thought that it was a good thing it happened against Kent and that it would be corrected. Give Kent credit for excellent execution.

I imagine that we will see it used against us fairly often

And I'm sure Kirby will expect and prepare for it.

Ugh Lord that was awful. I remember they definitely ran a thousand screen passes in 2002 when Thomas davis was still playing LB and we couldn't stop it to save our lives. 2014 they kept runnign somethign over and over again that we couldnt' stop but can't remember what play it was. Maddening though.

They run it a ton but if memory serves they didn't have a ton of success with it last year. They started out hot and scored a couple TDs but we pretty much shut them down for the last 3 quarters

Lassiter has gotten burnt a few times this year already. Definitely see Tennessee trying to pick on him the entire game.

I’d disagree. Yes, Smith took a bad angle, but Lassiter also needs to leverage himself against the block to push that player back to the inside.

I was surprised. We just couldn't figure out how to get enough bodies out there to defend it. We should run it as well. We'll certainly see it again in from some of our future film-watching opponents.
I remember Oklahoma and Auburn both ran similar plays and Roquan literally blew the receivers up.

Luckily for you, it wont be against us. We have been screaming at Drink to run screens, because we have the right players for it but he just wont do it.
How good are you guys at stopping QB draw? Thats about all we call along with deep routes where the ball ends up 20 yards from the receiver.
Your defense is going to humiliate our offense, maybe to the same level as powerhouse abilene christian did.

The CB should have contain and safety fill. 29 was in the right spot to fill, but the CB didn’t contain. 100% on the CB. 29 had the right angle for fill.

Good coaching by Kent St. But to someone else's point, Kirby and the D staff are usually good at making adjustments unless we were playing against Bama or Joe Burrow.
