Should Bowl games matter?

I posted in another thread that I don’t care about the outcomes of bowl games now. Outside of the playoff the players don’t take them seriously unless it’s some upstart wanting to finish a “good” season against one of the big boys.
I also said I don’t think it should be held against the coach as well. With the portal and players opting out how can the coach be responsible for players doing what they think is in their best interest?
I enjoy watching bowl games because you see matchups that you don’t get every year. But if you have 2 people enter transfer portal, 3 opt out for the NFL draft, and 2 others get surgery to be ready for the next season you aren’t fielding the same team. Use it as practice an extra spring and go play and have fun.

Winning a high level bowl game gets boosters and alum to open their wallets. Gives seniors an additional chance to shine before the draft. Puts a check in the win column for the team and coach. Any of these things would have been good for our team last season.

Why keep score?
Of course it counts!
It’s competition.
Should you not try your best at whatever you do?
I’ll never play a round of golf that means anything to the world, but I will try my best each time I tee the ball up.
In football, I hope the players and coaches are putting everything into trying to win no matter what the circumstances.

The one thing I have learned from this board is, they only matter if you lose them

With the CFP expanding it is playoffs or bust. Getting another W should matter though and it’s a buzzsaw matchup every time we are playing a better team at a lesser school that is happy to be there.
As for whether it should matter to coaches: it should. It mattered with Gus and it matters with Harsin. Harsin has had some success in bowl games and if we start walking back those achievements then I’m curious to know which wins on Harsin’s love me board actually matters.
Oh, and good morning, King.

I'm hoping that the bowls make some sort of effort to keep players from opting out. Maybe use NIL as a financial incentive - i.e. essentially paying players to participate.
That said, they are a bonus exhibition game that really shouldn't matter outside of the CFP. Which in itself is sad, because they used to mean a lot more before money essentially destroyed the sport.

They should matter. But they don't now to the players for some of the reasons you mentioned: NIL, portal, things like the Senior Bowl and Pro Days at every school get the last year guys in front of scouts one more time instead of possibly being injured in a bowl game.
I think bowl games are way more important to fans and the Athletic departments now. Outside the playoffs, there's nothing on the line for players for reasons mentioned above.

I was just wondering because it’s hard to judge a coach for what is essentially an exhibition game now and your talented players choosing not to play.
I’m as competitive as anyone but I realize That things have changed and players are about themselves especially when it comes to potential bottom dollar and I can’t say I blame them. Even in the NFL you normally get about 3-4 years unless you are a superstar

That is what I’m saying the players are choosing not to play. Is that a culture problem for a head coach or a generational problem with today’s players?

I'm equating bowl games with extra practice (at least it use to) and the rich getting richer. While the poor's get left behind even more.

Yes I agree as a staff they should go balls to the walls in practice almost like an extra spring.
But what will be a high profile bowl game outside of the playoffs when it’s expanded to 12 teams.
