Torchy's is trash
Considering Austin natives ate tacos 3 meals a day when I lived there, I can see why you'd be sensitive about them.

Started in Austin for sure.
I remember eating In N Out burger in Texas and it wasn't right. Moved to California and it's consistently great every time. Hopefully this isn't the case with Torchy's out of state locations.
In N Out is the most over-rated crap. The burger is ok, but the fries are by the far the worst of any fast food chain.

I always look at the Restaurants Andy Staples (The Athletic) put out in his "guide" for college town eating.
If I was going I would be trying BBQ somewhere and a great Tex-Mex place.
I've never been to Austin and have no idea if they are good, but here is the list:
Juan In A Million
Don Juan El Taco Grande (potato, egg, bacon and cheese in a hot tortilla
Hoover's
Jerk chicken or jerk ribs. Jamaica meets central Texas in the best way at Hoover’s, which also serves more standard barbecue and meat-and-three fare. I have a tough time ordering anything but the jerk chicken with sides of black-eyed peas and mustard greens, but they also make decadent meatloaf and a gut-busting country fried steak. After that, it’s just a matter of deciding whether you want apple, peach, blackberry, or cherry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
La Barbecue
The Texas Trinity with one substitution. You’re getting the brisket and the pork ribs, but swap out sausage for turkey. La Barbecue’s brisket is up there with the best in the state, but it absolutely makes the best turkey in Texas.
Leroy and Lewis
Something that isn’t in the Texas Trinity. Sure, they smoke Lone Star State staples like brisket here, but the mission of Leroy and Lewis is to encourage diners to get out of their low-and-slow comfort zone. The menu changes frequently, and the fun part is trying whatever they’re experimenting with this week. Try the beef cheeks or the barbacoa. If they’re smoking burgers the day you come, order one of those. They’ve currently got pork hash and rice on the menu as a side. That’s the first time I’ve seen that South Carolina-bred dish in Texas.
Loro
The most addictive chip-and-dip dish in America. Wonton chips come with Thai green salsa and peanut sambal. No matter how hard you try and no matter how many other delicious dishes you order — and there are plenty from which to choose — you won’t be able to stop dunking chips. When you finally reach the end, you’ll seriously consider ordering more chips no matter what else is on the table. But do try to branch out a little. The char siew pork belly is a good place to start.
The Peached Tortilla
Charred brussels sprouts with bacon jam and bahn mi tacos. The traditional bahn mi (pork belly, pickled carrots and cilantro) always lent itself to the taco format, so this is a logical (and tasty) move. For dessert, you’re getting the Asian Movie Night. That’s popcorn ice cream with caramel and rice puffs. The entire time, you’re drinking Margarita De Peached (habanero infused tequila, thai basil, Cointreau, lime juice). It simultaneously heats you up and cools you down, and isn’t that what we’re all really looking for?
Solid list. Obviously, there's great BBQ here. Franklin is world famous but you gotta get there at like 6am (unless you get it as takeout). Terry Black's BBQ and Stile Switch are solid choices. Cooper's is right there in downtown, on Congress Ave. The original Stubb's BBQ of course on Red River St. (Lots of homeless people in that area, be warned.)
Never been to Loro but Dee Dee (LINK /) is known as the best Thai food in Austin.
Eddie V's on 5th St will serve you one of the best steaks you've had in your life.

Baby Acapulco (Baby A's) still good? I think I've only been once but remember it being good for Tex-Mex.

Couldn't disagree more.

Considering they're fresh cut every day (never frozen,) I'm not sure how you can say this.
That being said, not everyone can be as perfect as Milo's.

I know TX thinks they have the best BBQ but traveling all around the USA I am going with Memphis.

It's okay. People mainly go to Baby A's to get trashed on cheap margaritas.

How much are they paying you?

I've had it. Can't knock it. It's great. But they do it differently than us. Not much beef.
This list is pretty epic:
Franklin's, Terry Black's, Stubb's, Cooper's, La Barbecue, Valentina's.

You can see them peeling and cutting potatoes while you're ordering at the counter. Just thought that was a weird statement.

Everyone should do the Trudy’s challenge before the game!!

Because that is how people who don't know how to make french fries make french fries.

I've never been, just wanted to make a the cheap joke

Bama fans can also get Torchy’s when visiting LSU right across from Tiger Stadium. Overrated in my opinion just like Texas football has always been.

No one can touch Texas brisket. They have no clue how to cook a pig, though. "Dry and flavorless" seems to be the most popular recipe.

BBQ started in the Island's with fish and spread with the European invaders. I like WKY BBQ but I love lamb / mutton. Hard to find BBQ fish these days but BBQ and pork is a great fit.

Which means they are full of starch and haven't been prepared...at all.
Among other things, they NEED to be cooked multiple times and they NEED to be frozen.
