Is Mercer a decent FCS team?

I know they played us close just a few years ago.

Not sure how that happened. Seems like there were several turnovers.

If we take care of the football and limit big plays, is this a walkover?
Or are the Bears a Playoff type FCS program now?

Should be a cakewalk. No FCS school should be able to come close to an SEC school unless they turn the ball over like 5 times that lead to direct scores.

They’re ranked #23 in the preseason FCS poll, behind SoCon mates ETSU and Chattanooga, who are both in the top 15.

To put that in perspective, when Jax State took us to OT in 2015 they were ranked #1.

I think Mercer will be more of a challenge to open the season than FBS Akron was last year, but we should remember that we struggled against them in 2017 coming off a crushing road loss to Clemson, then turned around and absolutely destroyed what turned out to be a decent Mizzou squad in Columbia.

Man, what a roller coaster of a season that turned out to be. Classic Gusball.

Oh I do… we had like a -6 turnover margin that game… any other opponent wouldn’t beaten us that day.

I think it’s the only game auburn has ever won with such a large TO margin

Does Finley become a Heisman front runner with a big game against the Bears?

4 fumbles and a pick.

That and for some reason we just could not effectively run the ball. We got our yards but it was in 3 yard nibbles all afternoon.

If we play disciplined and not sloppy for 4 full quarters, I'll be happy, and we'll win going away.

That was a weird game as I recall. Pettway was our only RB to touch the ball (save for a couple of swing passes to Devan Barrett) and he touched it a lot - 34 carries for 128 yards, and he scored all 3 of our TDs. However as I recall he showed none of the explosiveness he was known for prior to coming up lame against Vandy in '16.

Pretty much fell off the map after that, other than another 3-TD performance against Arky a couple of weeks later, which was the last game in his AU career in which he saw the field.

I don't remember what happened for him to fall so far out of favor. Attitude? Behavior? "Team Rules Violations"?

I think he was finally run off for too many tests.
He was never the same after that hamstring blowout though.
He honestly might have been using the cannabis for pain management.

Don't need another GA State game.

I guess it's possible that he was self medicating but it wouldn't have been for physical pain.
