Kirby Smart's Coaching Chops

SO We lost a ton of talent. We all know that. Recruiting has been top notch and we won a ring...so Kirby can obviously coach and recruit.
I am really looking forward to this year and how he manages success. How do we do during a "rebuilding year"?
How will Smart handle the expectations? Does our philosophy on the field change due to a probably worse defense and arguably better offense?
Its exciting to see how this season will unfold.

It is, and I'm not so sure the D will take a step back. We shall see.

We lost 7 DBs after 2020.
I think we can handle this.

There is no Jordan Davis on our roster. But outside of him, we may have talent upgrades up and down the defense (not necessarily better players. But taller, longer, faster inexperienced guys).

Jordan will be hard to replace but lots of schools have massive humans they can plug into the middle of the DL and be serviceable. Our biggest lost by far, IMO, is nakobe.
After 2017 I thought it'd be YEARS, maybe decades, before I saw anyone else as good as him in a UGA uniform and whaddayaknow we got his successor only a couple years later. Aside from that pretty weird but fortunate stroke of luck you don't generally replace a guy like that and not have a misstep. Not saying our defense will suck but having a cheat code like that in the middle of the D just makes every signle other part of the D be that much more efficient.

If we were replacing a QB, I'd be more concerned about a "rebuilding" year. That's usually the one that gets you.
According to Saban, 2021 was a rebuilding year. Their QB won the Heisman, they won the SEC despite a regular season loss and some pretty close regular season games, but still made it to the NC. If that's a Bama rebuilding year, then that's pretty damn good. If we think of ourselves on Bama's level now, then that's what we should also expect for a "rebuilding year".
At the level of recruiting we've been at for years, you are going to lose players to the NFL at very high numbers every single year. So is every year a rebuilding year?
I don't really believe in rebuilding years anymore, not for teams that consistently recruit in the top 10. I do believe in "breaking in a new QB" years. I believe those are still very real.

Think of it as more of a "remodeling year." Repaint some rooms, change some cabinets and furniture, and move a few walls. But it's still the same basic house but with a new look.

The watering down done by us, tamu, and other of Bamas pipeline has to show up.
I think there was cracks last year but they are growing.

Will Nolan step up and be that leader on defense tho?

Dumas Johnson is a very special player… Marshall is pretty good too.

I’m trying to think about it like this. Once Kirby got the right QB on the field last year in week 2, our narrowest margin of victory was 17 points. That happened twice. Once against UK when Stoops had money on the game and pulled that stunt on the final drive (so was really a 24 point UGA win) and then in the national championship game against Alabama.
Winning by 17 points is a blowout in my opinion. Others may disagree. But nobody can disagree that every other single game besides these two and with Stet at the helm was a certified emasculating blowout of the other team.
And obviously because of the lopsided scores in almost all of the games, Kirby was very conservative in the second halves. So these scores could have been even more lopsided.
My point after all of that is just to say that if the defense does take a step backwards and the offense is a little better, or even if offense is the same, we should still be in mighty fine shape. At least compared to last year’s competition
Our defense was obscenely good last year, but we still probably could have won it all with a slightly lesser one. It’s easy to forget just how dominant we were. So taking a small step back from domination is still really really good. It may just be that we won’t get to relax after the first quarter quite as much as we did last year. Might have to wait until halftime instead this time

I do think the offense will be a good bit better this year, and the defense won't be all that far from last year.

Yeah. I love Kobe.
But we are an ILB factory.
That is the spot I am least worried about (thank you coach schu).

"Rebuilding" is when you get a new coach with a new philosophy that hasn't been recruited for yet (like GT did a few years ago). Or when you have massive attrition of talented individuals across the board with no one ready to step up and fill those spots (like LSU from 2019-2020, or any lower-tiered team that has a "magical" season).
Alabama has shown time and time again that they no longer have "rebuilding years", but they instead simply reload. It seems that CKS has replicated that here, and I'm thankful for it.

Your ILB room was generational. I’ve never seen anything like it when studying an opponent. That will be the biggest drop off on your defense.
I paid close attention to Pops, Marshall and Mondon and they just don’t trigger like the three you lost. That’s not an indictment on those three.
I can’t tell you how many times they created negative plays where it should have been a win for the offense.

Very exciting! I think our defense will be better than we think but they are still young pups

Stackhouse, Carter, Walthour, and the freak Frosh Williams is going to be sick. That secondary is elite. Dumas Johnson will hold his part of the field at all times. Can’t remember when it was published, but one of the UGA writers said he was or was apart of something like 78% of the tackles when he was in. That’s incredible.

Just remember, nobody ever heard of 3* Jordan Davis before 2021. He was just a big dumb gap filler not worthy of any accolades whatsoever in 2021 preseason.
Same could be said for Travon Walker, linebacker, everybody talked about Nakobe Dean and Nolan Smith and Adam Anderson. Travon fricked around and was the #1 overall draft pick.
Don't think there's not any current "unknowns" on this roster that won't be "extremely known" by end of season.
Offense and Defense.
Lanning knows it.

This D is going to be top 5.
The O will be better
Also, I just don’t see any losses on the schedule. Neither does Vegas, double digit favorite in every game.

I like that this year's team is a bit disrespected compared to my expectations. Danny Sheridan has us at least 14 point favorites against all our regular season competition. Is Bama 14 points better than everyone they play? I'm not so sure.
