Very off topic, sorry.

Moved from out of state to Jefferson County last August. Registered for a state of AL license plate/sticker/registrationand got it no issues, it's the plate that looks like this:

My renewal date is in June based on name so 2 months ago I got the letter saying it's time to renew and I could online so I did. Kept the exact same plate, got my 2023 sticker in the mail, no issues.

So yesterday I check the mail and they've sent me another plate. It's the exacdt same letters as waht I have but it's the newer ugly looking tag that's pretty much all yellow.

1) I assume they're wanting to make this the current standard, am I required to use this one instead of what's already on there?

2) To take it a step further, in a closet I have the license plate I had when I lived here a decade ago that was the really cool looking plate that's mostly blue and pictures the gulf and ocean and has "sweet home" at the top, and as luck woudl have it it's literally exactly the same lettering as I have now. Could I slap that bad boy on there? I guess I'm ultimatley asking, can you get in trouble for having an "old" license plate even if the specific letters on it is current and valid and your sticker is current?

They change out the "standard" license plate every so often.
2022 is when they just changed to this one.
And, yes, I agree it's uglier than the previous, which it, too, was uglier than the previous.
2 plates ago, they created a beach-like theme which angered the mountaineers in North Alabama as to thr plate being not fairly representing of the whole state. Hence the new mountain-like one created a few years ago. I'm not sure who they're trying to appease now.
My thoughts are that they are purposely making the free standard plate uglier, in order to encourage the Residents to ante up the $50 annual fee for a specialized plate.

Yeah I've noticed a downhill pattern for sure. Thanks for the info all that makes sense.

Do you know if there are penalties for not using the standard plate they send?

Is there a penalty for using a plate that's not registered to your car? Seriously?

Did you miss the part where the lettering is the exact same? I'm asking if ABC123 on an older plate wiht a current 2023 sticker is not allowed or if I have to use the ugly yellow plate with ABC123 on it.

You must have a personal plate?
I thought the new plates changed the pattern for the license numbers
Before it was XXYYYXY, where the first 2 X's are the county identifier(one X in some cases), Ys are random numbers, the last X is a random letter.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. And yes it's a personal plate so I can see why maybe there was confusion.

Just my opinion or thought, as long as you have the right stickers with personalized plate you may be ok. I’d keep the new plate in the car somewhere too. Don’t be riding with dirt on or in you though.

You could always call the dmv, prayers for your patience..

Yeah, without a personal plate, your getting a random number. If you get the same ones, drive out of state and buy lottery tickets. But with a personalized plate, it may depend on whether or not your local police are assholes.

If you're in a city where they've got shite to do, you'll probably be fine. But if you're in a small, corrupt ticket mill town, they'll probably frick with you.

I personally like the new one. The mountains around Mount Cheaha is the probably the prettiest part of the state. That said, the cops around there would probably frick with you for the old tag. And if they don't like the look of you, they definitely will.

That's the last good plate the state had. The one that came right after that was terrible.

They are always the trashiest looking of all other states. Looks like it was designed like a gulf shores air brush T shirt from one of those shitty stores.

Yeah, our plates are usually garbage. Don’t know why they always look like an airbrushed t-shirt. It’s why I always get a UA tag. My wife is a UGA fan. When I got her tag a few years ago, she wasn’t too thrilled with 2N26.

Here’s the GOAT.

Here's the one I mentioned which was my first experience wiht an AL tag, I'm partial to this one:

The thing about some of the others in here is they're just so PLAIN. Not that I want some super busy loud license plate or anythign, but plain white with a little text is just kinda bleh. The one above is a nice pleasing blue with beach/ocean/sky. Very nice IMO. I think they were probably trying to recreate that wiht the current one but the current one is just SO YELLOW. The pictures of it onlin earen't that bad and it seems like they were going for a sunset/dusk kinda thing but it didn'tn really turn out the same in real life.

They’ve all been ugly since 1998. I just opt for the God Bless America tags with the US flag on them.

There are literally maybe 50 miles of beach in Alabama. That’s why few found that plate representative of the state.
