Why do pitchers need to warm up on the mound?

When they do a pitching change mid-inning, why the hell do they need to warm up from the mound? Isn't that what the bullpen is for?

Different POV, different catcher, etc.... dunno bud.

It's super important to get a few warm up pitches. The mound could feel different from the bullpen, the backdrop is obviously different than the bullpen, you've got a different catcher than you had in the bullpen, there's now an umpire standing behind the catcher, pitching a bullpen is a lot different than throwing in a game, etc.
I pitched back in the day. Having a few warm up pitches on the mound helps tremendously.

right? Kinda like once you do a soundcheck at one venue you shouldn't have to then do ANOTHER sound check in the next city you play...stuff like that drives me crazy

Dear Facebook it’s my first time watching baseball and I have a few questions.

Warming up in the bullpen is like shooting free throws alone in your high school gym. Warming up on the mound is like shooting free throws in the superdome with a crowd in the background. An adjustment period is necessary.

Tell me you never pitched without telling me you never pitched. Or played past 9-10.
Holy shite

I also pitched in college and agree with you 100%. Especially on college fields, the mound and bullpen can be significantly different.

Know how we all can tell that you never played baseball?… SMH

pitchers are allowed 7 warmup pitches from the mound to adjust

Because baseball is a weird old timey game with all sorts of silly traditions and conventions that will never die.

my guess is every mound is slightly different. I doubt the bull pen mounds come anywhere close to resembling a regulation mound

I pitched in my day. You definitely want to get a feel for the mound and the rubber, as well as acclimate yourself to the backdrop. Warming up before a start loosens your arm. Tossing from the mound is more about getting your mind right.

My confusion is why the fields aren't universal in measurements like other sports?

When I pitched I used far less warm up throws. I sorta thought it was pointless. 3 to 5 pitches and anything more I feel like I was robbing myself

Even one from the mound as a warmup is better than nothing coming out of the bullpen… I agree that some can take it too far, but adjusting to the actual mound, field, sight, peripherals, etc. makes warmups valuable.

Bc its a different view and depth perception throwing from the bullpen and throwing from the actual mound. Also, they have a different catcher.
