Dawgs’ success may hinge on CB, Muschamp; “we have never in seven years been this thin"

With spring practices mostly closed, it’s tough to assess the 2022 Dawgs at this point.
Still, an overview of the returning players and the holes to be filled in the starting lineup suggests that how things go at two key position groups — quarterback and cornerback — could have a lot to say about what sort of season the defending national champion Bulldogs will end up having.
The scenarios for the two positions are very different. At quarterback, the Dawgs return an obvious starter in Stetson Bennett. They also have a lot of talent behind Bennett, battling for the crucial backup spot.
Meanwhile, at cornerback, Kirby Smart said this week, “we have never in seven years been this thin.”
Nevertheless, for the first time in his career at Georgia, Bennett approaches a season as the clear No. 1, and his combination of experience, running ability and decent passing skills would appear to bode well for the Dawgs.
But, as his head coach reminded him publicly, there’s still room for improvement.
The situation is a bit more unfocused in the defensive secondary, where cornerback Kelee Ringo, of national championship pick-6 fame, and safety Christopher Smith are the only returning starters, though William Poole and Dan Jackson have a good bit of experience.
Of course, the defensive backs have a new coach this season, too, in Fran Brown, but Smart appears to be expecting great things from his new hire.
SEC coaching veteran Will Muschamp, now co-defensive coordinator, is giving the secondary a lot of attention. Muschamp “has been a game-changer for me,” Jackson said, “and, I would say, all the other DBs. Having that great defensive mind in there, critiquing us every day, that’s something I’m really grateful for. We’re blessed to have him, for sure.”

We get back 3 starters and 3 key backups from last year, and the top secondary haul from the 2022 class. Still hard to understand why we’re cycling so many 2nd and 3rd string db’s. I mean like close to 10 the last two years. And it not like they weren’t getting playing time yet. Not sure what that’s about. I guess having your key reserves recruited is the new normal.

I'm telling you guys, Tennessee's psssing game is going to give UGA fits this year. Even last year we had guys running wide open ghe entire game Hooker was playing with an injured throwing hand though.

If you're serious about football, it's always football season. Maybe this is part of Tennessee's problem.

It’s March. Kirby is 1. Challenging his own players and 2. Making an appeal to guys considering the portal.
He said similar stuff this time last year and has said similar about our receiving room this year.

It was 41-10 in the 4th quarter on your home field before you scored a garbage time touchdown. You’ll be a 3 TD dog. And you may cover. Hell, TN may win 9-10 games, but you’re going to need to improve drastically on defense to keep the 22 game close.

Naturally a lot of people got their feelings hurt, and took a swipe at you for posting this. I found it interesting, though. I would have thought last season we were thinner, since we lost something like 5 DBs, and one or two of those were thought to have starting roles going into the season.
I do agree with the poster that feels like it is coach speak to get them to work harder and keep anyone from transferring out. I also think we will have 1-2 more new guys (recruits) that will step up Kellee Ringo style and get a lot of playing time. With so may teams (like ours) playing more DB heavy formations I think having thin DB rooms will become the norm for just about everybody. It seems to have hurt Alabama last year at the end of the year. Will we see teams recruiting more DBs to offset this?
