Brady may not be coming to Bama, but he 100% called plays at LSU. Emsminger was not calling plays contrary to what Eddie O tried to sell

-- “I don’t think Bill is trying to leave,” Saban says of Bill O’Brien. “I think he’s looking forward to that challenge.” Saban did acknowledge how the NFL’s calendar was pushed later into February and how this was the first time he was not able to attend the Senior Bowl. But Saban indicated no departure from O’Brien is imminent. “We have no indication of that, other than what y’all put on the Internet right now, which is a lot of maybes. We’re not trying to address anything that might happen.”

It would be cool if Saban was wrong about that. But then again, with some of the possible OC names I see y'all throwing around, another year of frustratingly underperfoming offense seems kinda not so bad.

If Marrone is gone, then it may not be.

Saban: 'No indication' Bill O'Brien would leave Alabama for NFL (BOL)

quote:

Nick Saban doesn’t like hypothetical questions, which is what was posed to him Wednesday in regard to offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien and interest from NFL teams. However, Saban did shed some light on the situation on the same day he announced a 27-man signing class.

O’Brien interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head coach opening and has been linked to offensive coordinator vacancies in the league this offseason. Most recently, his name was one to watch in New England – where he spent five years from 2007-11 – as the Patriots’ look for a new offensive play-caller with Josh McDaniels moving on to the Las Vegas Raiders.

Saban was asked about the NFL’s hiring cycle extending into February this offseason and how he would approach that should O’Brien leave Alabama for New England or another job.

“Well, you’re asking a hypothetical question,” Saban said. “The only thing I would agree with you on is the changing calendar for the NFL has sort of extended the time that people would have opportunities in the NFL. Even the Senior Bowl was pushed back a week. This is the first time I didn’t go to the Senior Bowl since I don’t know when because there were things that we had to do here. I always meet with all of our players on our team on Monday and Tuesday before signing day. I spent all day today talking to guys that we’re gonna recruit next year. The new calendar, again, it’s something that we all have to adapt to.”

He continued by praising the job O’Brien did in 2021 as the Crimson Tide ranked among the top 10 nationally in scoring, passing and total offense, thanks in large part to the play of quarterback Bryce Young, who won the Heisman Trophy in his first season as the starter at Alabama. Young will be back behind center as a junior with 15 games of starting experience.

"Bill’s done a great job for us here, and Bill’s had a very successful career. I don’t think Bill’s trying to leave. I think he likes it at Alabama, and we have an opportunity with some pretty good players at the quarterback position and other positions to maybe continue to grow and develop here offensively and I think he’s looking forward to that challenge.

"But saying all that to say this: I’ve always been one that guys work hard and do a good job for you, if they get opportunities to go someplace else, I wanna support them and help them if it benefits them and their family. But we have no indication of that other than what y’all put on the internet right now, which is a lot of maybes. So we’re not really trying to address something that might happen.”

One thing Saban said last night at the Senior Bowl Summit, is that him and Belicheck don't hire guys away from each other without consulting each other. He might've even said it was like a gentlemen's agreement. So if anyone goes to the Pats or vice versa, it's something they've agreed to.

It's obvious Saban wasn't satisfied with Marrone, but he sounds pretty satisfied with O'Brien. He didn't rule out a potential return to the NFL, but it sounds like he's welcome to stay as OC.

I just want BoB to run the fricking ball on short yardage and goal line opportunities mainly.

It seems to me our offensive performance, including BOB's play calling, was limited mainly by weak OL performance (Marrone).

Yeah, at this point.... We'll have to accept that he is staying on as OC.

This might not be a bad thing for Young and the corps. I'm hoping Bob writes down lesson learned from the season:
- It is okay to make adjustments throughout the game.
- It's okay to run inside the red zone.
- It's okay to use a player to motion to confuse Defense
-It's okay to be less predictable.
-It's okay to run the play that was working, and dont' stray from it.

Correct that and He will be fine.

Who is responsible for the auditing of last year's efforts and results? How do the coaches and staff respond to the self-eval auditing? Maybe the ST, OL, DB replacements are an indication of how the auditing has been dealt with?
Have to agree with Bama needs to be able to run the ball in from short yardage; but, also agree that the Oline made that mostly impossible last season. Let's see the improvements Coach Wolford can make over basically the same time period as Marrone... I, think lots.

Hindsight is always 20/20, but really and truly in a lot of games this year with the offense if the OL had performed at a higher level we'd probably see a lot less griping about BoB. He's not my favorite OC and he did some dumb stuff for sure, but so have lots of other OC's we've had over the years in certain situations. It has to make calling plays much more difficult when you have low confidence in your OL executing their assignments or having poor coaching at that position. LOS determines the outcome of the game almost always.
