Or maybe there is no desire on our part to get burned by LK again?

Or that he just isn't worth the $16M/year at least it's probably going to take to get him.

I'll play this clown's game.

The only acceptable name is Buster Faulkner. I would just say Hell yeah, let's rock and roll.

Could be: Casey Woods Garrett Riley - This would be a terrible.
Could be: Shannon Dawson - neutral, I'll give the benefit of the doubt.

Brohm off the list.

I don't really believe this but I don't totally dismiss it.

I agree 16 is crazy but is 13 million crazy for 4 years of 10+ win seasons? Compare that to the buyouts we pay for being Jaba

I would love to see what Kiffin at LSU could do with a roster of studs but would absolutely hate to play them

One thing I have learned from this thread is many people think Lanning, Kiffin, James Franklin, and Sark are mediocre coaches but Brohm, Dilly, and Summral are the next Lombardis

Literally nobody has said that.

You need to use your brain a bit and realize that winning ~10 games at Texas is completely different from winning ~10 games at Missouri.

I don't get how this premise is confusing to fans. Some of you seem completely unable to understand the simple concept that programs have completely varying degrees of ceilings and baseline expected results. Your literal example of Steve Sarkisian proves this. He was a ~7 win coach at Washington over 5 seasons, and now he is what? An amazing elite HC? If he was an amazing HC then why didn't he win more at Washington? How come he only became an "elite HC" once he got hired at Texas...where he gets to field more talent than ~97%+ of the rest of the programs in the country? Do I need to explain to you that having more resources and more talent makes it easier for the HC to win games?

Would Ryan Day be competing for National Championships if he were coaching at Purdue instead of OSU? No, obviously not.

How many Championships did Saban win at Michigan State?

How many Championships did Spurrier win at Duke?

Steve Sarkisian's apparently amazing record as a HC:

5-7
7-6
7-6
7-6
8-4
9-4
3-2
5-7
8-5
12-2
13-3
7-3

Guys - if you took away his name and pretended that this is coach "Joe Schmoe", there wouldn't be a single person here excited about that resume.

The guy legit has only 2 seasons of double-digit wins out of 12 total seasons as a HC .

Just a notch below Kirby, but the main thing with Kiffin is you are guaranteed success that would please everyone.

But I don't think Kiffin is a Saban, and he is a dangerous pain in the butt has far as PR.

I suppose it's possible Auburn just decided not to enter the Kiffin sweepstakes. But I think more likely we didn't anticipate being able to compete with the bigger openings and had already been denied at the alter once.

There is no denying that Kiffin is a great coach.

But, do we really wanna put ourselves through what Ole Miss fans are going through right now? His name is going to be associated with every big coaching job every year.

And every time it is, he’s gonna flirt with them and troll everyone. Do we really want a “will he or won’t he leave” every other year?

To me, it’s not worth it.

To be fair, for some (if not all) of those ~ .500 records, he was calling plays drunk off his arse. Pretty impressive.

I wouldn't call him great yet. Very good, yes, but not great.

This is only his fifth 10 win season as a P5/P4 head coach. He has also only won 6 or more conference games four times at the P4/5 level.

He's a great offensive mind, and has OM on a roll, but he needs to actually win championships (conference or national) to be considered great.

To be fair, I think 16 million a year is more an indication of LSU’s desperation than it is of Lane’s true market value. There’s a lot of moving pieces driving this. You have Bama looking vulnerable, still very good but not elite, aTm and Ole Miss surging and of course pressure from Texas and Oklahoma.. I think there is pressure to not only strike big and surge to the top, but also pressure not to slip and fall to the middle of the pack. Sexton is no idiot. Hooking a desperate LSU into a ridiculous contract has a cascading effect that benefits all of his clients. If he gets Lane 16 million, he’ll have tons of leverage renegotiating each of his clients contracts.

100%, but it is probably going to be the reality of what it would take to get him.
