To be completely honest, I'd kinda like for Clark Lea to still be at Vanderbilt when we find our footing and remind them who we are.

I'm not trying to champion Schumann, however, Georgia had an all-time great defense under Lanning. There is no way that D wasn't going to take a step back when those guys started going Pro.

That said, it isn't like Georgia is allowing teams to score at will. I feel like the guy has held his own, considering the talent they've had to replace.

He was at 'Bama '08-'16 (SA/GA). He's been at Georgia ever since. So, Schumann has learned from two of the best head coaches the game has seen I have no way of knowing if he was paying attention, but, I doubt Kirby/Saban are in the habit of keeping people around who don't.

Now, that doesn't guarantee He's the next Lanning from that coaching tree, but I wouldn't be surprised, at all, if he is...

And Schumann knows SA / GAs and players that will make great coaches just like Pat Dye knew Wayne Hall and Neil Callaway.

But too much Saban / Smart in him - let's hire from Troy and Kentucky.

I hope this is satire. I put nothing past a group of Tigers hoping the hire aligns with their opinion

If they’re going the coordinator route, Brian Hartline should be at the top of the list. But Cohen isn’t willing to take a gamble.

Are we still in the randomly calling out names still?

Worth noting that, yes, Schumann was indeed part of that staff.

You think Auburn is in a position to gamble right now? Being so SAFE that you screw up is one thing..... but hiring a coordinator (Not named Durkin) when we are a HALF step from being Tennessee 5 years ago could seal our fate. I don't understand why people have a Hard-on for this Tulane guy, but at least he's had to somewhat build a program. Whoever the hell they hire he CANNOT just think his scheme alone will save us like that idiot Harsin. This guy has to be a maniac recruiting, and a decent-good coach. That's hard to find apparently.

Nope and neither does Cohen.

Durkin has the stench of loser on him. That would be the biggest gamble of all.

This is why I’ve said I’d spend the farm on Kiffen. He’s proving this year he’s got what it takes to win it big. I’d pay him 13 m if it means he’s at Auburn.

Anything short of Meyer or Saban is a gamble. The trick is to find the guy that gives you the best odds.

If it's Sumrall, I am fine with it. I just want AU to conduct a real search and interview numerous good candidates. What I don't want is the "PTB" forcing Cohen to make a hire because they know a coach from the country club.

Genuine question...... what about the Tulane guy has everyone so optimistic? Durkins appeal is based on what he's already shown us he can do on defense, and his ability to POSSIBLY retain the roster. Kiffin, Kenny, Franklin, and several others have been to the playoffs or are closing in on a first appearance. So why??? What about Summerall makes you believe that he's a better bet than any of those other guys?

a lot of it is risk vs reward

Kiffin would almost certainly require a $100m commitment, which might be worth it but would be disastrous if it wasnt

i think Sumrall is more of a “if it works out then we’ve got a guy who will give us 10-15 years of competitive football” but if it doesn’t we’re not looking at a Jimbo/BK like chain around our necks

i dont think Sumrall will command and outrageous contract and we can load it with incentives

Dilly would potentially be an Elko-like hire, but he will likely also demand a huge bump in salary to leave his “dream job”

Franklin would probably do alright to get the program back on track but unless he will come on the cheap it probably wont be worth it in the long run given his woeful record against teams with better talent

tl;dr Sumrall is not by top choice but i would feel comfortable with him if his salary was commensurate with what he’s accomplished this far

Re Sumrall, I’m impressed that with only 5 returning starters (offense and defense combined) and 60 something new players on his roster, he’s contending for a CFP spot. Shows he can build a roster and develop talent. I realize some others can do these things too, but not everybody can. I like his youth and his no excuses, hard nosed approach.

Alan Head just said that its looking like a Top 4 of Lea, Drinkwitz, Durkin, and Sumrall right now unless there is a surprise that pops in.

I like Sumrall on that list, but that’s about it. None of those guys constitute a “shocking name” that Cohen blabbered about to Mike G while Mike was trying to convince Cohen to just give the job to Durkin.
