I love Trae Young, but much of his success comes from the space he creates with his lethal shooting ability. The defenders have to respect it so it makes them vulnerable to his good but not great handle. He doesn't have the quickness and tight handle that Sharife has. His vision has improved but it wasn't always there.

It's kinda ridiculous to sit here and say a guy that's played in 1 college game is better at anything at this point offensively than a guy that just averaged 30 and 10 in the NBA. I know how good Trae is. Trae was an elite passer in year one. He shot it like arse his rookie season, but the passing and court vision were always there.

Rondo is a bigger, better athlete than Cooper, great defender when engaged and peaked pre 3pt revolution.
The poster above was correct that I was mostly referencing that specific post, but I wouldn't necessarily say Rondo is a bigger, better athlete than Cooper. Rondo is 6'1" 180 Cooper is 6'0" 180 and they are both cat quick. The jury is still out on Coopers on ball defense, but I thought he looked good Saturday. In high school I always thought he just looked really uninterested in playing defense and seemed lazy at times on the defensive side.

I'm just saying at this point in their careers Sharife is ahead of where Trae Young was in those areas. That's why Sharife was more highly regarded as a prospect coming out of high school than Young was as well, despite lacking a couple of inches against Young. His strengths are different than Trae's. Trae is a no leave guy on the perimeter.

We'll see. Sharife's first game offensive stats almost matches Trae's college averages. I hope Sharife can keep it up, but he's going to have to start hitting some threes or teams will adjust to what he did Saturday.
Anyone know if Cardwell is ok? He looked like he had to come out with a leg injury late in the game.
He's starting to provide that inside power and strength we don't have.
I assume that Powell will be good to go Wednesday too.

I don't know how easy it will be for teams to adjust to what he was doing. He is an elite pick and roll PG especially for college much less it being his first game in 11 months. On top of that he was doing it mainly matched up against one of if not the best SEC defender in Herb Jones for most of the game. A consistent three will help no doubt but what he was doing Saturday he will continue to be able to do for the most part

Lets not lose face that we are 0-4 in conference and much improvement is needed. Maybe we looked a little better but still gotta get much better on defense and offense. Like I've been saying eventually we have to start making the turn in the curve and the time is now. No more excuses to be lost on defense consistently and taking horrible shots at the end of the shot clock. Even as bad as UK looked they are sitting at 3-0 in conference now.

Yeah he is that good. The only antidote is just to help off shooters and clog the lane/take away lobs and pray we miss wide open 3's. And then I'd say attack him on defense.
And if they want to clog the lane, imagine countering with a small ball lineup of 1-Cooper 2-Powell 3-Johnson 4-Flanigan 5-Thor. Would struggle on the boards and rebounding a bit but would be insane offensively.

The defense was absolutely atrocious Saturday. They scored 94 while missing tons of wide open looks.

Second chance points really hurt us too. We’ve got to learn how to play around the basket. That means not having multiple guys going for blocks and not boxing out, not boxing out in general, and not falling for every single pump fake.
That's what I'm talking about it's time to start putting something together. Just out getting minutes without starting to defend properly isn't the goal. The goal is to use those minutes this year to get better in all aspects of each of the players game and learn some team chemistry. We have played what 12-13 games. We are at the half way point it's time to start getting individually better and playing better as a team. Someone has to step up and be a leader on the court and start holding people responsible.
I love Bruce but I'd have to say this is probably the worst coaching job with a team he's done since being at AU. Some of the teams that barely had any talent played organized and didn't settle for hitting 4 3's a game and having a big dunk.
After the good game by Cambridge with the 3's and hustle after that good game he went right back to taking bad shots and half ass'n it on defense the very next game.

Then you forgot about that year that Harper and those good players came in as freshmen.
Pearl complained during the year, how his guys would not play good D. That year we lost a lot of games giving up way too many points. That year was also the year that Harper and Brown jacked up way too many 3's and Brown struggled.
And that team had a lot of young guys too. But Pearl said the emphasis was getting better defensively in the off season, and they did.
THis team is similar. Sophomores and Freshmen, who didn't play much D in HS, and now has to learn to play D in college.
Pearl will get them there...it may take an offseason to get them to play better defensively again.

Teams will go under screens and not play him so tight around the 3 point line. I'm not trying to rail on Sharife. He's a great player. I do think unless he starts hitting threes, then teams will be able to negate that quick first step some.

It'll be interesting to see. I'm obviously hyping him up a bit but it was one of the better first game freshman performances I've seen. I agree with Corch on the whole defensive argument but a lot of the errors seem to be correctable mistakes not just fatal breakdowns.

Powell has been medically cleared from his concussion. I believe today was his first practice so he got a little work in at the 2 and with Cooper before his first game back

I doubt Powell plays midweek, bit if he does it will be limited. From what I've heard he had a monster concussion.

He has been cleared to play, per reporters on Twitter.

That doesn't mean he is 100%.
