Apparently Wiley’s appeal will be heard tomorrow. Definitely still a long shot, but you never know.

Here is what Hooks posted on the ITAT board about players turning pro

Heron

quote:

Heron will test the waters. He will discover he is not currently draft material or not high enough to logically leave. Now does that mean he and his family make the correct logical decision? Hard to say as their goal is for him to be a pro and he's not in love with being in school etc. Heron is a really solid player but he lacks the correct size, reach and elite athleticism that will hurt his ultimate NBA chances. He needs to continue at the NCAA level improving his game with the skills he has. Chance of returning IMHO 70%

Wiley

quote:

Wiley will test the waters. He will discover he is loved by the NBA. He will be told he could be a high 1st round draft pick or second round. They will also tell him he needs another season to test himself and to ensure his body can take the abuse of playing as he has had a number of injuries in HS and last summer. This will be a tough decision as many factors may make him and his family take the immediate lower $ and higher risk and leave but if he wants to really be a lottery type pick he needs to return (take out a insurance policy on himself). Lastly the current NBA no longer views guys like Austin who primarily play back to the basket as crucial as the NBA of 10-15 years ago. Chance of returning to AU IMHO 35-40%.

Hooks on recruiting

quote:

Even before the Chuck debacle we never had plans for a large 18 class. 19 was and is slated to be a big class for us both in size and quality. How 18 looks in final will boil down to who goes and who decides to return. There is a nice grad transfer option as well and don't forget we add Samir next year as well.

quote:

Depends on grad transfer market as the regular HS route is pretty poor this year. The 18 class is abnormally poor nationwide.

At this point I don't think it ooc is going to make much of a difference. 23 wins seems to be the magic number. The ooc was good enough with the strength of the conference not to really hurt us.

23 isn't the magic number for a #1 seed

A win tonight would do a whole lot for my confidence in us making the tourney. Right now my brain says we have like a 90% of finishing the year well enough and my heart has us at about 25%. I am a battered fan.

I don't think we win tonight, but I'm right there with you. I think we are walking a fine line and I'm just waiting for the rugged to be yanked out from under me.

Wiley/Purifoy on scout team is awesome for this game. Purifoy/Wiley match up really well with the skillsets of Porter + Tillmon

This is an extremely tough one. It is extremely hard flying out to MZ and playing them at home. They are a very long, athletic team who plays slowly too

I won't feel great about AU until Mustapha breaks out of his funk. If he can get back to finishing well and shooting 35-40+% 3FG we should be a lock

I think Heron AND Harper need to come out of their funk for us to have a chance. Both together are hitting under 30% shooting, which is terrible for our 2 most experienced guard/fwd.

We can't rely on BB to shoot us out of our periods of poor shooting. He will have a bad night, and it will be up to those 2 to help. It's not going to come from Anferee or Okeke.

It would be nice if Murray would recover too. When we play such big teams, he gets neutralized bc of his lack of height. He tries, but it looks forced.

Heron and Harper both seem to be going through a bit of a soph slump. Brown went through a little bit of one last year before he finally snapped out of it.

To Murray's credit.. he may force early in the games lately but I think he has done a nice job of adjusting in every one of the games he has struggled. The numbers may not be great but he has continued finding ways to make winning plays for us.

Murray has shot 50+% 2FG in 4/6 SEC games. Outside the UGA game, Murray has been just fine. He avg ~13ppg 8rpg in the on 50% 2FG + 7.5FTA per game in SEC play before that. He definitely forces some bad shots up, but Murray hasn't been bad and has done a great job defending the post despite being so undersized

A person who deserves a lot of credit though is Horace Spencer. While McElmore has struggled scoring consistently inside, Spencer has really stepped his game up

66.7% 2FG #7 in SEC , shot >50% in 4/5 games with FGA
#4 in STL%
#8 in BLK%
#13 in DReb%

Horace has indeed been great lately. I'm still absolutely terrified every time he has the ball, though.

I freaking love it when goes for the hook shot. You can tell he put in some serious work on it in the off season.

In somewhat Auburn related news, former Tiger Trayvon Reed is in the top 10 nationally in blocks per game. Above Anfernee.
