What is the solution to this problem?
There aren't enough student tickets for the demand. Many (most?) freshmen don't get season tickets. A few get full season, most get 2 games (crappy games) or none at all. The international students (Chinese primarily), who care nothing about football, have learned that they can order tickets and then resell them on the black market to freshmen. The student ticket season book costs $140 from AU. On the black market, they are up to $600 - $700+.
How do you curb this Chinese black market?

Market sets the price.

As a school, I can't deprive them of the chance to order tickets. So the only other ways I could prevent it is if I 1. Become strict on you can only use your own ticket (which would be wildly unpopular with all the students) or 2. Expand the student section (which wIll cut into my revenue)

So the only real solution is if those freshman try to hold out until the price goes down. Luckily I was fortunate enough to get a full season my freshman year. I had plenty of friends that managed to find season tickets at a much better price than the Asian students asked for.

Fixed this for you. Its not a China issue. The student ticket black market has been running for at least 15 years, likely much much longer.

The majority of those selling their season tickets are Asain. That is a fact.

I must have missed that from a recent issue of OANow or Birmingham News.

Every time I sold my student ticket I was white. And every time I bought one, I bought it from a white person. Again, this was 15 years ago so perhaps asian folks have infiltrated the ticket market but they certainly didn't create or cause it.

I applaud their American capitalist spirit!

My first game as a student I bought a ticket from a 6'5 black guy with dreads past his shoulders. I am neither 6'5 or black. The lady scanning the ticket just laughed when she saw it.

Auburn's system is better than most IMO. Hell, a friend of mine went to Texas, and he said it was very common for a student to never get student tickets to their games.

It kind of gets annoying that the student section is consistently over-sold.

It's only annoying as you're trying to get settled into your spot, but it's crazy seeing thousands standing in aisles as I go buy my mixers.

Students start showing up earlier and staying later. Hard to justify taking seats from cash paying fans and giving discounted tickets to students who are drunk and barely make it to halftime

There aren't enough student tickets to meet the demand for big games. You will have a hard time giving your tickets away for the non FBS Power5 games

Curbing the resale market is one of the dumbest things you can do. Right now you have a large number of suppliers trying to sell goods to someone who values it cash wise more than they do.

I know a bunch of "non international" students who are willing to sell season tickets for 400-500$ because that $300 profit is worth more than going to the game.

If you somehow restrict the resale market, there likely will be a large number of people who value the tickets at $140 but not at $300 (profit from selling). Therefor, you will have an even larger shortage of tickets as you decreased the price while simultaneously reduced suppliers.

People who aren't huge football fans typically take immediate profit at beginning of the season. That is "international students" on average

People who like football but not more than big profits typically take the market risk of how good AU is going to be. In a season like this upcoming 2015, if we go undefeated ticket prices skyrocket per game.

The demographics of who is selling the tickets depends on what time of year you are looking to buy

Rig, as someone who doesn't remember 75+% of 2010 season as a student, I make that comment

For real, AD was pretty insistent when we were redoing some block seating initiatives that people show up a full hour ahead of time. They said it was embarrassing when the student section wasn't full for pregame video feeds + second half of games

**ETA: That was predominantly a block seating issue and why they started letting block seating be a free for all in 2013 if the section wasn't filled.

Speaking from experience. I just graduated last spring.

Me too. I have no problem with them reselling their tickets. If that's the way the system works then take full advantage of it. If the tickets aren't worth 600-700 to you then don't pay it. It's pretty simple.

Students show up plenty early enough for pretty much all the games.

The issue you're talking about I think is solely a frat issue. They show up late because of their guaranteed seats.
