A little deeper dive into our budget numbers from Josh Vitale:

quote:

Auburn athletics reports record revenue, increased profit during 2018-19 fiscal year

AUBURN — Auburn's athletics department reported a record revenue of more than $152.4 million during the 2019 fiscal year, according to the university’s NCAA Membership Financial Report.

That's an increase of nearly $5 million from the 2017-18 total of $147.6 million, which was the previous record. It also marks the seventh straight year that revenues have increased.

Auburn's profit margin also rose, according to the annual report released to the Montgomery Advertiser on Thursday in response to a Freedom of Information Act request — the department reported an operating excess of nearly $13.2 million.

That's more than the $7.8 million total reported during the 2017-18 fiscal year, but not quite as high as the $14.6 million and $15.2 million in profit Auburn claimed in 2016-17 and 2015-16, respectively.

Auburn's operating expenses decreased, from $139.7 million in 2017-18 to $139.2 million in 2018-19.

The department actually made less money from ticket sales than it did the previous year ($31.9 million compared to $33.2 million), but earned an extra $1.67 million in media rights; $1.07 million in program, novelty, parking and concession sales; $747,344 in NCAA distributions; and $381,485 in conference distributions

The largest increase came from "guarantees," or money earned from participation in away games — Auburn earned $4.3 million in 2018-19 compared to just $44,000 the year before.

Auburn spent $1.48 million more on coaching salaries, but $948,983 less on administrative staff and $2.64 million less on severance payments for past coaches and administrators.

Football ($95.1 million) and men's basketball ($15.5 million) accounted for more than 70 percent of the department's revenue. Both sports made more than they did the previous year ($93.5 million and $11.2 million, respectively).

Those are the only two NCAA sports considered to be revenue earners. The rest of Auburn's programs operated at a loss of more than $29 million combined.

It is is so hard to get a good gauge, especially in football w/o seeing the breakdown per the last 2 years, how football revenues/expenses were at all affected by the w/l records Gus produced.

Gus's salary may become pedestrian soon w/ Orgeron now passing him...and possibly other SEC coaches if they get into the playoffs or SECG(Mullins), etc..

All this tells me is that "many" have no idea how much we pay our coaches compared to the rest of the country.

3.8 and 900k is no hurdle to overcome by the blue bloods of the respective sports.

so you think Bruce Pearl should make 8 mil like Calipari and Butch Thompson should make 2.3 mil like Tim Corbin?

yeah, I'd say making AU head coaches the highest paid coaches in the country when they haven't won a NCAA championship, or made it the final round of a NCAA tournament, is pretty dumb

I'm not sure if you were trying to bolster your argument here that we don't pay our already top 10 coaching salaries enough.

Just for clarification, but you’re okay with Steele’s?

And no I’m not saying pay Bruce on a Calipari level. 5 mil would be a good number. Any number that is going to keep him here feeling handsomely rewarded and content is good.

I assume since we played Oregon in Texas to open 2019 that our revenues will be similar to 2018, but that may not be the case.

The way I read it.......that was revenue generated ending in 2019. We opened in Jerry World. I am not sure if the Outback money was figured as part of the revenue. We also had UGA/bama at home in 2019.

We also went to the Final 4 and World Series in 2019. I would think the Final 4 was a big boon financially.

You mean coaches are paid based on performance and current market conditions? Say it ain't so Joe because there are posters here who don't want you to make that argument.

The folks that want Gus fired yesterday wouldn’t be any happier if he was making $3 million a year. The displeasure about Gus’s salary is really just their displeasure over Gus overall. Which is fine.

But pretending the value of a contract has an affect on your satisfaction of the season or where the program is at is just kinda silly I think.

We lost 7 games this year but our coach only makes 1million dollars so it’s a good value.”

I think Bruce going from 37th in pay to 11th in compensation, and 3rd in the SEC only behind Calipari and Barnes is pretty darn good. (p.s. have you seen Barnes contract? geez, 100% buyout and 1mil possibly earned in bonuses).

I don't think for now, Bruce needs to get 5 mil. Now....if he wins the SECC, SECT or makes it deep into the NCAAs again in the next 2 years, then go for another mil.

The contract is the reason why he’s still at Auburn. He would’ve already been gone. Everything is about that contract.

I can pretty much tell you that 4-5 loss seasons and let-down bowl games aren’t keeping him around. His offense isn’t keeping him around either. He couldn’t even figure out he needed his two best receivers on the field at the same time. Not sure what’s so funny about it.

From Phillip Marshall before the Iron Bowl:

quote:

Though there are influential people who believe a change is needed, the buyout of more than $20 million is apparently too much of a hurdle to overcome to get any kind of consensus. Things could change if Alabama wins in a blowout, but even that does not appear likely.

And I’m sure there are many posts of the same nature from the year before.

Just like there are many posts that Steele is leaving if Malzahn stays from our insiders

Totally!

And don't forget his first game a few years back, when he played a different QB on every down to start the game. Trying to be cute on offense.

...and I can stack a lot of pancakes w/ plays he thought of or tried to run over the years, that on this board left many of us scratching our head or ....

...now I am getting hungry!
