So who are you going to get?

For the sake or argument, let's say we buy Gus out after this year. Who would come to Auburn?
We nearly sacked Tommy mid-2003, and did run him off in 2008 after he had probably the best team in CFB in 2004 (maybe Auburn's best team ever). Made a controversial hire with Chiz; won a natty but fired him 2 years later. Made another controversial hire with Gus. Based on his highs, had two very good seasons with him but seem to be on the verge of letting him go. Individually, those (fires/departures) all may have been/be the right decisions, but why would a "name" coach be willing to sign-on as Auburn's next HC?
Assuming we did find a "name" to step into that, we'd not only have to buyout Gus but also likely the new guy with his current school.
Are we willing to take a young, hot shot FCS HC or FBS coordinator? Or someone like Kiffin who may be perceived as "damaged goods?" Good news that we might be able to get either for about a quarter of what we're paying Gus, thus it only costs about what we're paying Gus now. But what if he wins, and we have to give him a raise? If he doesn't win, are we right back where we started?
Serious question.
OTOH, if the "new normal" is $7 mil for 7 years with a 75% buy-out, I'm sure there'll be a large stack of resumes (including mine) on Mr. Greene's desk.

Day at OSU. Can probably get at a fairly reasonable price.

OK, him, Matt Campbell, and perhaps others. Not trying to be argumentative, but if they're so good, won't other schools (with a better track record for what might politely be called patience and consistency) be after them too?

Maybe, maybe not. That’s not going to be any different for anyone worth hiring.

Throw a bunch of money at Bob Stoops and make him say no.
Then take a chance on Dave Aranda.
No to Kiffin.

I want us to get off of this "next big thing" cycle and find a proven coach. No more hotshot upstart coordinators. These issues that chiz and gus have should have been worked out as a HC at the lower levels. Idk whos next but they need to have experience.
Ed O should be coach of the year because his experience helped him see value in a coach I thought would be a sure fire failure in Steve Ensminger. And Ensminger's years of experience apparently taught him to be a competent OC so far. We need Experience at the HC position not the hot name.

We arent gonna fire Gus. This is dumb.
We would have to pay 17M in 30 days, plus another 17M then roll the dice on some essentially unproven coach that none of us will be happy with. Basically a repeat of Gus and Chiz experiment.
Basically a roll of the dice with a price tag of just under $40M, including the new coaches salary.
Waste of time to speculate on who is available.

This is from Jay G Tate on the Bunker
quote:
Good morning. I'm not down with changing stories/columns after they're written unless there is a factual error. I see no factual error in last night's ADOB. However, after speaking with a few people whose opinions we trust, we no longer believe a buyout would need to be paid wholly by "the program's loose affiliation of luxury-box (and court-side) millionaires." The university/department will be on the hook for some of that money — if the team continues to slide and the decision is made to fire Malzahn. This won't be a fully private buyout, we're told. People keep mentioning that the university "can't" absorb a financial hit like this one may become, but we think that's (mostly) idle chatter. Auburn has a long history of doing what needs to be done when it comes to football. Also, and this is something I absolutely DIDN'T KNOW when I penned the column last night, Steven Leath will be held accountable if this buyout becomes a reality. I'm told by multiple sources that his favorability rating is much lower than casual observers realize (I am a casual Leath observer myself) and that triggering the Malzahn buyout could/would cripple Leath's ability to govern the university. I see no scenario where Allen Greene is affected; this mess wasn't of his creation. He was the AD at Buffalo when Malzahn's current contract was negotiated and signed

I wouldnt mind going after stoops. With the whole Joe Mixon debacle, plus others while at OU,there would be alot of scrutiny. But hell Ubran's coach did the same thing and he is still employed. All of that would go away mighty quick imo. And we could get him rather reasonably if he wants to get back into coaching.

As I pointed out, the cost of doing this is largely reliant on who we replace Gus with. If we are willing to grab non P5 coaches who make ~$2mil per year, all we are doing is changing the timing of cash flows
- Gus Remaining 6 Yrs = ~$42mil over 6 years
- HC at $2mil/yr + $30mil Gus Buyout - ~$43mil over 6 years

We would have to pay 17M in 30 days
This would be the bigger obstacle, but worst case we can finance it. Would add a few extra million, but it would be spread over the bond duration

Well, maybe I'm wrong.
I just do not see paying that kind of money for a roll of the dice. We could well end up with someone worse than Gus or not much better, believe it or not.

I'm sure we could come up with the money if we had to, even the upfront money.
Im a gambler, but it just doesnt seem like a good bet right now.
Who knows. If the team packs it in and recruiting class falls apart the trigger may have to be pulled. I think it is very unlikely though.

No way we are able to grab someone like Stoops with the buyout. A Kiffin or Clark is a possibility, but I can’t see us giving the payout it would require to get Stoops and still be on the hook for Malzahn.

Stoops was a good coach, but he was clearly declining until he stumbled onto Lincoln Riley + Baker Mayfield.
By the end of his career, Stoops' teams succeeded based on the quality of his assistants and not due to Stoops himself.
I wouldn't make a $40mil gamble on Stoops being able to rebuild a program + find assistants again

My point was more that we were planning to pay Gus $42mil over the next 6 years. So the problem becomes liquidity / cash flow timing, not overall cost if you make the bargain hire

I would be very much opposed for a coaching buyout being paid for out of the University's academic budget unless athletics pays it back.

I know money talks, but I doubt an up and coming, bargain bin coach would want to step into a situation where a school just fired a guy they signed for 7 years the previous off season.
Just screams career suicide

frick it. if we are going full retard, lets go after Dabo just to keep him away from Bama. He's basically at Auburn with a Lake now.
