We scored 31 points - I wouldn't consider that stopping anything. Your not going to get 5yds a play in the national title game unless you draw a Notre Dame type team. This will be the same next year. Teams will load and blitz and stop us sometimes. However, We should win most any game after scoring 30 - in particular our D will be much better next year. Had there been another 2min on the clock we would have gashed them for another 80 and won the game. They were gassed at the end - just as Gus wanted. He didn't count on the Kick Return.

Jernigan went balls deep in the second half. He completely blew up the middle of the field and for some reason we kept running right at him on first down.

I would say our offensive struggles stemmed from a string of poor playcalling and very good defensive line play.

This.

The worse part of watching FSU come back was watching us hit the middle every play instead of going wide more. I thought Gus was letting his ego get the better trying to prove we could run it through there. At least run it to the other side with Fulse and Prosch in the backfield. It bugs me when coaches do plays when they aren't there over and over instead going at what the D is giving or best chance of giving them like they preach to QBs all the time.

Yeah, we wore Jernigan down and put him on the sideline but it cost us a lot to put him there. But it all came to missing too many plays all the way around. The missed FG, missed wide open TD passes, missed interceptions, and big penalties at bad times.

Some of you are pretty smart on this Xs and Os stuff, so did FSU figure it out in the 3rd quarter and put out a blueprint for everyone else to follow or did it work despite running into a tough defense?

I am not a coach but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express a few times.

I think what happened was FSU simply told Gus "if you run it, you are going to be forced to run it right at Jernigan because we aren't giving you the outside."

Now, Pruitt certainly isn't the first guy to think of this brilliant strategy, but he had a couple of advantages others didn't:

1) He had a month to prepare his team

2) He has the fastest LB's AU has faced (all high draft picks) as well as an all-world secondary (better than bammers).

So, basically, Pruitt could do this because of talent. He knew that no one was going to be able to outrun people like Lemarcus Joyner (CB) or Telvin Smith (LB) to the outside. And if AU had to run it inside, he knew he had a possible first rounder at DT (Jernigan).

So, yeah, FSU basically put on a clinic of how to slow down AU's run. But the thing is 99.9% of teams AU plays will not have that talent. LSU and bammer can come close some years, but the talent FSU had on D this year was simply outlandish. Not only were they better overall, but much faster, especially at LB.

Nope. We just taught ourselves that the ball is too easy to follow when we wear white, and should throw out those jerseys :)

3rd qtr has more to do with Gus entering Derp mode than acting FSU was doing.

I've gotta question. Do you guys think Marshall is actually making a read on the read option? Or is Gus calling who gets it from the sideline? It seemed that Marshall wasn't even paying attention to reads at times just picking at random who was gonna get the ball.

Marshall is making the read. There is no way Gus is calling it before hand.

Also, as others have said, FSU blitzed from the read side to funnel everything up the middle.

If Nick was a little better passer we could have ran double slants to that side and made them stay at home.

Cant remember if this is my first post but War Eagle and thanks for making this the best Auburn site. You know free speech and all unlike the NaziFamily.

Nailed it. That was the fastest defense I have seen in awhile and we still put up 31 pts and over 400 yds against them. If we execute we win. Props to FSU though. They played faster and stronger in the 2nd half which was something I didn't think they could do
