Indiana isnt some fairytale. Cuban dropped bags and Cig pulled big talent in on the lines. Their 1s are legit, but they have zero depth.

Except that you are wrong. You can easily see the rankings of the players on their current roster from when they transferred in last season and the year before.

They are starting to pull some higher ranked Portal additions in this current active class, but their actual current roster is NOT filled with what most people assumed was "big time talent". Mendoza and the OC from Notre Dame were the only Top 100 players they signed last year from the Portal. The remainder of their class was literally filled with guys ranked 300 and lower:

What they have done is simple: they have elite talent recognition, and elite coaching. So they have taken a bunch of older mid-ranked players that the "industry" has overlooked, and they have coached them all up into considerably better players than they ever were at their previous schools. They are CREATING elite players. That also includes Mendoza, who couldn't lead Cal to more than 5-6 wins in two seasons as the starter. He wasn't a "Heisman talent" at Cal.

He pulled guys from ND, Whisky and recruited well. This narrative he converted a bunch of FCS kids to a title is nonsense. Mendoza was a P4 starter.

ETA

And Indiana has more cash flows then 99% of programs.

Snowden is 5’10. Gibson is 6’0 according to their roster sizes.

Gibson was a big miss from the staff/nil department but A&M dropped a BAG for him.

Again, you are wrong. Mendoza is one player. You are free to see where in the national rankings the majority of their transfer portal players were ranked. On, paper, their two transfer portal classes (which make up their roster last season. and this season) were extremely MID. Hugh Freeze signed more Top 100 players from the Portal last season, than Cignetti has signed in two seasons at Indiana.

The VAST MAJORITY of their portal additions have been been players ranked in the 500+ range. They literally have players they signed who ranked in the 1000's to 3000's. They have a handful of players signed from places like Wisconsin, but they were almost all ranked as nothing players, so I'm not sure what point you are even trying to make. They took nothing players from places like Wisconsin and Maryland who were not standout players at all (otherwise why were they ranked so low?) and turned them into elite players. That is called coaching.

Here is their 2025 class:

Doesn't seem like CB is a position they're willing to overpay at and i kind of agree. A good pass rush can make average cbs look much better. It does confuse me a little how we let Amaris get away though. DE and edge should be priority positions I'd think

so was Payton Thorne

Mendoza had decent stats but was 8-12 as a “P4 starter” before this season

and IU was probably outside the top 20 in NIL spending (Cuban didn’t start throwing bags till after the 2025 class)

And that is my point. Mario knows this and spent cash there. But Indiana isnt some Cinderella. Cig has done a fantastic job, but they arent any Boise or some other small market team.

Neither one could have got the job done with an O’line.

It’s a part of the process and when missing pieces it’s usually ineffective.

During the telecast last night the announcer mentioned that Curt said he had a terrible Monday because guys where upset that he signed a bunch of Portal guys at their positions. He told the announcer that these guys are still going to have to compete. My point being let's see how he handles the portal window, and all of those guys asking for cash if and when they win a title. (I don't think anyone can argue that elite development and coaching can win games) BUT many of us need to see a larger sample of this formula before we crown this guy the new Saban. If he pulls it off again next year and goes on a run then yeah..... He's the new blueprint

Auburn has resources but over the years fans like to exaggerate them. It was probably 8 years ago when ADAG slashed our budgets and took the smoothie machines away.

Auburn has also won a lot of games so we will never be someone's darling unless the world needs us to beat Bama.

People look at Indiana, their players, and their stadium that sits 50,000 as a cinderella. They deserve it but it wont last long. Their model will be duplicated. Any team that can fit 25 Chad Baker Mazaras on the roster will win.
