Those are pretty terrible numbers, and it’s gone on for years.

In HS our coach made us shoot 20 min of free throws after the main practice.

Free throws are house money, need to improve those percentages.

Auburn players shoot a lot more than that I assure you.

Broome went 6-16. He’s a career 60% guy. Some big guys spend their entire off seasons constructing and reconstructing their foul shots and many times to no avail. A lot of times it’s because their hands are too big but not sure if that’s the deal with Broome or not. Hopefully not and he’ll come back next year and be a 70% guy but I wouldn’t hold my breath

I love Bruce but this is a shortcoming of his coaching (every coach is deficient at something). I don't care what you have planned for practice, you have to make time for free throws, especially the way we have been shooting them all year. Free throws are extremely important in the SEC because the officials blow the whistle every chance they can get.

Again, Bruce spends a lot of time in practice and asks a lot of players between practices on shooting free throws. We were 6th in the SEC in FT% in conference play.

I'd actually argue he spends too much practice time on it. (I was a student manager from 2014-2016)

We had 6 guys who averaged more than 1 FT attempt per game:
WG 84% Elite
JW 77% Very Good
AF 76% Very Good
CM 71% Good
KD 69% Decent

JB 56% Bad

So you guys want to spend a bunch more practice time fixing the flaw of what really amounts to one player struggling from the line? When they already do spend a lot of time on it?

I'll add further, if you want to have a quibble with our FT approach as a team it's this.. Recruit bigs who can make free throws.

Johni Broome 70-125 56%
Yohan Traore 8-23 35%
Dylan Cardwell 7-22 32%

That's a combined 85-170 for 50% between those three guys.

That's your quibble if you really want one here.

You could just stay clear from basketball threads because nobody cares about your butthurt agenda. Nobody wants to be one and done.

Free throws aren't at the top of the list when it comes to basketball recruiting. The coach is looking to see if the players skill set fits into what the team needs. Do you know why they don't really look at free throw percentages while they are recruiting? Because this is something head coaches which makes 7 figures annually and 6 figure annually assistants are paid to fix, especially in the off-season. Most D-1 teams has someone on their roster that should be a shooting coach and if we never hired one since Chuck Persons left then we dropped the ball.

Agreed. Just saying if you want to fix the free throw problem as a priority that's the way to do it.

No. As others have noted, they spend the majority of their time recruiting and scouting and game prepping and installing.

Did you read the OP? The 3 years Chuck Person was allegedly our shooting coach (he wasn't) were 3 of the worst 4 years from the foul line.

Our 3 seasons with the supposed shot doctor:
63%
2014-15 - 67%
2015-16 - 63%
2016-17 - 67%

Every season since then other than the Okoro team has been above 70%

Had a coach that would make us get 10 FTs in a row before we left practice. Needless to say we became pretty good FT shooters. And like someone said they were just free points.

Pretty sure Wen would have been the only player to make the game, if this was the case.

When I worked with the team I would rebound for Cim Bowers after practice. Bruce would usually make them shoot 100 before leaving. He would generally make 80-85 of 100. Shot 50% in games.

Game pressure free throws are a different animal.

Cinnabon had sideways rotation.

It's easier to get in a groove when you are just standing there shooting a FT shot after shot too.
