I have to admit, I have mixed feeling about this.

Thrilled for Brandon.

Pissed that our secondary coach(es) sucked so bad.

good on him. It is a tough pill to swallow that we literally recruited him for a specific role and he couldn't even start at that position. Yet, now he is on an NFL roster as an UDFA rookie.

strangely, I love the idea of the 3-3-5 base defense matched with a speed hurry offense. Just never could get anything going with Ellis.

Johnson ran a 4-2-5 not a 3-3-5

Muschamp is somewhat closer to a 3-3-5 if you consider the buck a "LB" and not a standing DE

Wait, am I an idiot? As I've said before, I haven't gotten to watch an substantial AU football this year, but I was expecting a 3-4. Can someone possibly fill me in (whether in their own words or just by linking) on what Muschamp's philosophy here is? I'm starting to feel like a real moron...

You could consider Muschamp's nickel packages a 3-3-5 defense if you call the buck a LB

In theory, Muschamp prefers a 3-4 base defense like Saban does but we don't have near the personnel to run one.

a. we lack a nose tackle and Monty has to be on the field since he is our best defensive lineman.

b. we have the ends for the 3-4 but lack the linebackers to play it right now.

c. Tim Irvin is the nickel back that we wanted to play Star for 3 years. An aggressive guy that could play safety with some cover skills but also has the size to slide into a rushing linebacker.

d. Lawson really does hurt us pretty bad because he plays that buck spot very well and we haven't found a guy to replace him even close at that spot. Buck is a stand up end/linebacker that can cover a tight end or back on the flat but also is one of the primary pass rushers also. I thought that Jeff Holland was doing a good job at that buck spot and I'm surprised that they are moving Cass over to play it instead of Holland starting.

e. It all starts up front and Muschamp is seeing the big problem and I think he will fix it soon enough.

We can't fix it when we don't have the bodies to do so

As someone who has met Tim Irvin in person many times, he does not have the size to be a linebacker. The guy could maybe be 5'9 if he did yoga in the mornings.

supposed to be 5'8 or 5'9 and about 200 to 210. That is a pretty thick body at 5'8 or 5'9 and he is fast enough to slide up to pass rush. He isn't asked to do it in his role as a nickel back though.

The Patriots must be terrible at evaluating talent. They could have R. Smith or J. Whitehead. King could not beat out either of them.

Muschamp is a multiple front guy. He doesn't stick with any one particular front scheme come hell or high water like Ellis.

Gotcha. Thanks guys. Hopefully, I can see the UK game and see it for extended action. I know the struggles of 4-3 to 3-4 switch. I'm also seeing what improvement can happen year 1 to year 2.
