Just feeling a little homesick and down. Ginger, the 80's girl's father owned and ran Chucks. She worked there on and off - I figured Leto might know her as he mentioned on tRant that he had worked at Chuck's. She and her ex-husband opened Jim Bob's out Opelika Road near Tiger Town about the time it was being built I guess. Not sure if it is still open.
I am watching all the games and have to sit through commercials - Taco Bell, Chik Fil A, all kinds of pizza, restaurants. About the best I can do here is McDonalds or Domino's. And no Sonics. BK pulled out of Japan years ago, but Wendy's is expanding. It's not the same.
Miss BBQ, fall in Auburn, cheap food and BBQ (have to cook it myself, which I don't mind), golf, family, friends, and catfishing. And fried catfish. And hush puppies. Baked hams....sigh.

First time I went to Japan was around 1990. There was a McDonalds near my hotel in Kawasaki. Walked there for breakfast one morning. They had 2 items on the breakfast menu then. You could get a Egg McMuffin or a Fish Sandwich.

Curious being in Japan, can you get Wagyu briskets, and if so, how pricey are they? I will order one from Snake River Farms once or twice a year here in the US, but we are talking $159 for a 12-14 lb brisket.

Ate at the BBQ house one time. There were literally a thousand flies buzzing around. It was like a scene from a horror movie. Never went back.....

However?…in the “Gone-But-Not-Forgotten” category…that was as good as any you listed (and better than some others)…your list isn’t FULLY comprehensive, Fly-Down, unless you include the Pig Squeal in Waverly.
This man knows things. There was also Junior Long's out in Beauregard. Junior had the best Brunswick Stew ever and fine que.
Somewhere on the innerwebs is an interview with Chuck where he discusses the history of BBQ in west Georgia/east Alabama. According to Chuck, settlers from S. Carolina brought their particular brand of BBQ and the tangy mustard, vinegar sauce. As a boy, Chuck worked at one of the early places in Phenix City (maybe Chicken Comer's or 13th Street), then opened a place in Lanett (still there, but different owners) before opening his first location in the Auburn/Opelika area (behind Mandarin House).
When Jeff Price married Chuck's daughter, Chuck got the Price family going on the BBQ scene, and they did well.
Though Chuck has retired, the location in Opelika still churns out familiar plates of tasty que.
SCDB, you weren't, by chance in Waverly on Saturday night to hear Shinyribs at the Standard Deluxe?

Was chucks in Opelika? If so I ate that a ton. My roommates dad loved it and would buy enough to feed an army every home game weekend. I also ate a good bit at the bbq house being an ag student.

Spot check, The first Chuck’s sandwich I had was from that small stand they set-up just behind the Mandarin house, I remember thinking that I had discovered a great hole-in-the-wall place to get Q sandwiches.
Supper Club-never claimed to have the FULLY comprehensive list for Lee county. There are all sorts of places in the county that cook up some amazing stuff….
AU wits end, I have been there, lived outside the US for about two years and you do get homesick. I hope this thread is a good distraction for you.

Chuck's started out in a small cement block building behind the Mandarin House (Previously McDonalds). It was in Opelika, but just barely.
Chuck's is now located on Geneva Street in Opelika. At one point, Chuck opened a place on Shug Jordan. I think he let one of his employees take it over. It's now Sheila C's Hamburgers.
If you liked what you got from the hole-in-the-wall behind the Mandarin House, then you'll like the Chuck's on Geneva Street. It hasn't changed, thankfully.

Chuck Ferrell Oral Histories Alabama
The Ferrells were also on my OA News paper route.
Auburn-Opelika Tourism, Prices Barbecue
Price’s Barbecue House to close after 38 years
Alabama BBQ
Both parents' families are from middle Tennessee, Clarksville and Houston County. Good BBQ upthere - sauce is hot vinegar. July 4ths, Thanksgiving, Christmas get togethers. MMMMMMmmmmm.

I wish I could say I was, but I haven’t been to Auburn in a couple of months.
The Standard Deluxe is a great venue & I’m glad that it’s really taken hold and it appears like it has “staying power”. I’ve been to a couple of Old 280 Boogies and a handful of other shows over the past few years and have always had a great time…I just never make it to town as much as I used to.
Besides being a great place to catch live music, it’s only about a five minute drive back to my place…and it’s very conducive for hitching a “designated driver” ride from someone heading back to Auburn ‘cause I’m right along the backroad way to The-Big-Town.
You know ‘82 ?
…sometime when our respective paths finally converge simultaneously in the greater Auburn metroplex…we would be COMPLETELY remiss if we didn’t hook up for a Beer or two or ten?
(…and quite likely a few ounces of Bourbon thrown into the mix here & there for good measure)

Sounds like a good plan. Don't know if you like Shinyribs (featuring Kevin Russell, formerly of The Gourds), but he and his band put on a great show. Really liked the venue.

Haven’t caught Shinyribs yet, but I really like The Gourds, so I’ll have to keep an ear out for them on the live circuit.
Thanks for the heads up, ‘cause they’re probably right there in my wheelhouse of musical taste.

You know, Billy?…If I didn’t know better? I might be thinking you possibly have some reservations about committing to slugging back a few rounds with the ‘Ol Bus?
I’ve floated that proposition out at least a few times throughout the years…and I’ve always gotten a tepid-lukewarm, generally non-committal, semi deflective response from you.
I have yet to get anything remotely close to a “Hell Yeah-frick Yeah…Let’s Make It Happen !!” type of reply.
Your response usually goes something along the lines of when Carl Spackler asks Ty if he can swim in Ty’s pool while “playing through” Spackler’s grounds keeper barn in the middle of the night in Caddyshack

Oh yeah, if you liked The Gourds, it's a safe bet that you will like Shinyribs. Kevin Russell is the front man and the drummer was also in The Gourds.
He does some fine covers, like Bitch, Better Have My Money and When Doves Cry, plus original songs like Take Me to Lake Charles and Who Built the Moon and Poor People's Store. Here's one for your FBotD:

Listen Felonius, we end up in Lee County at the same time, and I'm buying you a cold beverage -- that is unless you'd prefer a wee dram.
