Does no one else remember that Stoops became (in)famous for choking in big games?

You wouldn’t take that? Just look at Oklahoma and Ohio State after losing their top tier HCs. The programs are well oiled machines now. So heck yes I’ll take Stoops to get the program righted and then bring in one of his protégés to keep it going.

Believe they forgot, outside of the Natty in his 2nd year he didnt do a whole lot except when a crappy conference. People just see a big name. My concern would be he wouldnt stay long as he retired because he was scared of health reasons.

so South Alabama can afford to fire their coach but we can not. That is non-sense.
I think I read his buyout was like $100k. The first step in getting rid of Gus is getting enough support and money from boosters to pay the buyout.

I still like Hugh Freeze. Call me crazy but the things that went on at Ole Piss will not go on here. I would also like to throw out Eric Bieniemy. I know he will most likely never leave the NFL for college but I think he will be a huge get but that is just a dream

Stoops won a NC, won multiple conference championships, put a lot of players in the NFL, owned his rivals, several 10+ win seasons. If that’s choking, sign me up.

I’m warming up to Campbell. Winning consistently at Iowa State is really tough to do. His biggest question mark is whether he can recruit - which is a big one.
At this point I think the question is whether we can compete with his other suitors and whether we could afford him.

I don't think Stoops is going to be a real long term option. Well to be clear I don't think he's any sort of option.
But the name alone would bring in $$$ and recruits and would create enough jolt to lift the program for a few years. And if he decided he no longer had the energy or whatever, it should only make the job that much bigger for the next candidate. It'd be a big credibility boost for AU going forward.
I've said similarly about Pearl. I want him here forever, but if he can show the country Auburn can win and is a good job worthy of big candidates, it makes the blow of his departure easier to manage.

I'm pretty sure he will land a head NFL job. But I'm not convinced he isn't just the Lashlee to Andy Reid's Gus.

That’s exactly what I was saying. Stoops gives a big boost to the program. Do I think he’d stay for a long time? No, but the program would be in great shape when he leaves.

This thread is one big circle jerk until something is done to Gustavus Moronicus. It needs to be anchored.

I agree. Serves no purpose.

Stoops would give us a huge boost, and lets be honest outside a handful of coaches not many stay at 1 school for a long time.

It also serves as a solid reminder of what happens when you start throwing out names of potential HCs based upon whatever criteria you prefer (past performance, connections to program, 'flavor of the month', etc).
When the OP started this thread in 2018, here's a few of the names in the first few pages:
Les Miles
Bobby Petrino
Chip Kelly
Gary Patterson
PJ Fleck
Of course there was a lot of support for Kiffin at the time as well.

*Proven winner as HC at lower level.
*Top tier recruiter.
*Spent 10 years between the Clemson / Alabama staffs during career.
*Rumored to be selective about next job. Reportedly turned down Miss St in 2019 and SCar in 2020.
Everyone tell me how bad he sucks.

I get that totally but OP needs to change it to the UNofficial 2020 Head Coach Search thread since ole booger eater is still with us.
