Fun story. I graduated from my dream school (Auburn) with zero debt.
Same here except for the 4 years that I owed the government in their service.

I have a friend that milked a secret clearance from active army and a connection with a friend to 180,000 job at Redstone Arsenal. His entry job was only as a cable puller.
Do we know the same guy?

I don't know too many from Cullman.
my guy got in and redstone pretty much paid for any training on his journey up the ladder.

If I was going to college tomorrow, it’d probably be at UNA. Florence, AL is an amazing small town. Just enough to do and close to Hville and Nashville. School is solid and cheap.
We take several trips there every year to fish. I’d love to retire there.

I would suggest the junior college route for 2 years to get the basic courses under the belt and then transfer to the school that best suited your kids new career choice at that point in their life. My youngest son attempted to go that route and I pushed back. He went the 4 yr route but honestly he took 5.33 years to get an undergrad degree and then enlisted in the military without telling me first. Lol. After he served 6 years he used his GI bill to get a few masters degrees and has a decent income in the cyber security/ crypto field. Set your limits on what you will pay and let your children pave their path.
Oh and my oldest son went ROTC and got 50% paid. He could have gone to UNC at 100% scholly but wanted NC State and the tech path so they only paid 50% at State. Not sure the logic just realty

College has evolved to a sort of club med with classes. The amenities are silly.
When I was at Auburn, the student center, Foy Union, had a TV and some folding chairs. A ping pong table. Intramural basketball was in the old barn. Food was basic. Hamburger under a heat lamp. Cafeteria style. It was a little better at the hill dorms on Sundays. Students mostly lived in apartments or trailers. Most apartments were very basic.
Now everything from entertainment to housing to food is like a resort. I don’t see how students are not disappointed when they graduate and their first job does not allow them to have all those amenities. Also the all-inclusive resort like food situation does not teach them to budget. We ate basic stuff like a can of tuna or PBJ sandwich. No fufu type food.
One reason the costs have escalated is the government involvement in student loans. Institutions all mark to market. Another reason is the keeping up with the Jones’ attitudes about amenities. Alabama gets hot tubs and Sandals Cabanas at their student pool. Auburn needs an indoor running track with elevation changes and waterfalls.
I assume higher education is going to get a reset. With the internet, I can’t see shelling out 30K a year to read Shakespeare, study Newtonian physics, or much else.
Demographics are also changing. There is a smaller group that will be matriculating in the intermediate future bc people had less children. Also men are choosing trades over school after years of the schools not valuing men.

So true. Potted meat, cheap noodles. There were many machines broken in the student gym when I was there. Large part of Mag hall was condemned. Rooms in there were crappy. Oh and the apartment owners didn't care about fixing up their apartments. My mom refused to go into one of my apartments as she thought the 2nd floor railing were leaning so much. She wasn't wrong.

have 2 buddies that did computer science at JSU. They’ve done quite well for themselves. Cyber security is a booming field.
Soon to be replaced mostly by AI.

My graduate "office" was in Wilmore.
Used to wander over to Foy to play video games as a break. Mid-80s.

People sure love cheerleading AI though. Cyber isnt even the first field on the chopping block.

He was talking about UAB. UAB is in a shite location. If Samford and UAB swapped locations I would heavily consider UAB.

As a person who has been doing Cyber for many years...it won't be taken over by AI. AI might supplement the mundane but you still need humans in the loop for a lot of things.
