I just don't understand how Duke, Kansas, & LSU can just give the NCAA the bird and we can't?

It's an everything thread.

tl;dr is..
Chuck Person was an arse and victimized AU hoops for his own financial gain steering players away from us to the a financial agency when they turned pro for potential kickbacks from an agent.

Our program's image has been degraded and kicked around for 4 years by the Dan Wolken/Pat Forde's of the world despite us being a victim of Chuck Person.

We are being lumped in with serial cheaters, pay for play type cheaters, in part because Bruce Pearl somehow became the pariah of the NCAA when he lied about a bbq.

So now a bunch of players who have never even met Chuck Person have no postseason to play for this year and the sports world laughs at us.

It's amazing to me how ignorant other fans are of what really happened with Pearl and the NCAA at UT.
And they are just as ignorant about the current situation

And if you tell them what exactly happened at AU it just goes in one ear and out the other. That's why I've deactivated my Twitter while the dust settles on this. It's a fruitless exercise.

AG self imposed this punishment without knowing what we are getting, I think we could still get hammered by the NCAA because they don't give a frick.

And the ones that hate BP from his past, say it isn't enough. They want BP suspended for the year.

No one is laughing IMO, but if these other major programs that are fighting back somehow win, THEN the sports world will laugh at us.

If they get hammered more, then what Auburn did will look better. But it never benefits the current players unfortunately.

I don't think Auburn would have done this without getting input from the NCAA. I think they are confident this will end it, other than maybe being on probation for so many years just to monitor the program...

I’m still trying to figure out what AU the institution did. Didn’t the FBI conclude that AU and a few others were actually victims of Person and the rest?

Yeah but at the end of the day we had a coach paying players and the NCAA sees that simple fact with no nuance. They are big on the role of head coach and oversight.

However, there is nothing Pearl could have done to stop Person doing what he did other than having a 24 hour surveillance on him, or I guess just never hiring him.

In a fair and just world, we should actually be awarded punitive damages from Chuck Person and sports media would agree but that's not the world we live in.

Here’s a good summary on the scope of what happened

Ferg-
quote:

Person accepted bribes from financial advisors and paid money to families of two players in hopes of getting them to retain said advisors when their sons went pro.

It was not paying players to come to Auburn.

Vitale-
quote:

This is all over $91,500 paid to a since-fired assistant coach. Of which $18,500 was offered to the mothers of two players already on the roster. Of which only $1,950 was actually paid.

Ultimately, money changed hands from a coach to a player’s family. Not a recruiting violation but still against the rules. Players sat, Person was fired, but he still broke the rules while acting as an Auburn coach. It sucks for Auburn and Pearl

Personally, I felt like sitting those players and firing Person was enough. Auburn also essentially cut ties with every recruit Person was in contact with, which was like all of them, for about a year until they signed elsewhere

The Chuck Person thing has been hashed and rehashed. It's the Shariff Cooper thing that is concerning to me. "His dad is an agent" is not a good look. If Shariff doesn't play this year, we're fricked.

And if there's any consolation, Person's life and bank account were already in shambles prior to dipping his toes into all that, so you can only imagine how low he has fallen now.

This. With rosters full of fricking underappreciated guys that big (pay for play) programs wouldn't even have as blips on their radars.

Yeah, I'm not even going to look at comments anywhere. Blocking it out. But when I didn't do such a thing in the past, I always liked to go through our rosters and ask them how exactly we were cheating. There is no coming back from that for them, but they still go back to Pearl.

Good Lord, man. All this is related to the Chuck Person nonsense? Wow, I don't keep up with everything like I used to so I thought we (and all the other teams involved in that agent junk) were done with all of that.

As already mentioned, it's insane that some of these other schools can just tell the NCAA to get bent, but here we are punishing kids that had absolutely nothing to do with the original infraction. I kind of understand it though, because the NCAA has had Auburn under the microscope for as long as I can remember. Just hate it for everyone because none of them are named Chuck Person and they're paying the price right next to him while he's the only one responsible.

Your average sports fan is an idiot that just wants to take pot shots. They delight in their ignorance and in places like the SECR it is celebrated. These people also tend to be Forde’s primary audience.

This is spot on and good perspective to keep. No need to get myself all riled up.
