The culture of not giving the boosters the access they want and kissing their asses I'm sure. Steele will fix that.

Outside of a few knuckleheads that love to run their mouth after making a tackle 12 yards downfield, is there a bad culture problem at Auburn?

That's kinda like the last thing I'm worried about as a fan with this hire.
100% my opinion, but I think they are throwing Gus under the bus (didn't do that on purpose I promise) to make Steele look better and sell him turning it around. To that I say if Steele is supposedly this magic fix then I better not see any of the same issues I saw this year and we better win a whole lot of games.

It is not a player culture that needs fixing but a Wealthy Entitlement culture that needs fixing. That is where Saban was given carte blanche

Exactly! I thought it was time for a change at the top, but the biggest thing for me in Gus's favor was the clean program he was running, the way the players handled themselves, and appearing to be pretty clean. I dont see there being a culture problem at all. This was a matter of wins/losses and how the team looked on the field.

Ahh, yeah that makes sense. I was looking at it as they were saying a culture problem existed in the locker room. The people who want to feel important didn't like Gus' culture of not slurping them at every turn.

Because, say what you want about Gus, but he always handled team cancers pretty quickly and severely (Duke Williams not withstanding ).

If they don't announce that Tim Jackson is retiring when the new hire comes then it's going to be the same song and dance.

He's that little rat on the longest yard that runs to the guards to tell them everything.

Now PM has a big article trashing the Gus years lol. Some of the stuff I believe, but they try to make out like the man was the worst coach ever or something.

I agree with slacker130. I think MC is locked up and they fired Gus on Sunday with plans to give 24 hrs to view the body then announce MC today but Wash pulling out of the champ game threw a major wrench in those plans. Now we have the smokescreen committee buying time until Sat night or Sunday.

I'll do you one better. I'll paste the part about Malzahn. I've already made up my mind I'm not renewing my sub with them and so its whatever..

-I am not going to go here into what happened Sunday and Monday, but I will have a column tomorrow morning (or late tonight) that should answer some questions. I will say that the only person involved in this who wanted a search commitee was president Jay Gogue.

Since it keeps being asked, I’m going to offer some thoughts on the “dysfunction” in Malzahn’s time as head coach.

--Coordinators were presented with new assistants they had not even interviewed and without their opinions being sought.

--For eight years I have heard complaints from Auburn assistants about Auburn’s recruiting operation being rampantly disorganized.

--Defensive coaches and offensive line coaches have pleaded to no avail for more physical practices. Outside of spring and sometimes in preseason camp, Auburn never went best-against-best. Most programs – Alabama, Georgia, etc. – devote at least a period to that on every full-contact practice day.

--Malzahn made every recruiting decision on offense – who to recruit, who to offer, who to sign, everything.

--Malzahn decided who started every game on offense, until this year at least, made every substitution. My opinion is that was a vestige of his time as a high school coach that he never really shed.

--Malzahn flip-flopped from calling plays to not calling plays and back at least six times. Coaches tell me that behind the scenes it was actually more than that. He would stay out of it for a while and, invariably, get involved again. This season was no exception to that, though I really did think it would be.

--Malzahn did not like to connect with fans. What was once a tour of Auburn clubs in the state and surrounding states during the summer became only a small handful. Auburn fans – like others – want to feel like their know their head coach and have a connection with him.

--Like it or not, making big donors happy is part of the job in any big-time football program. Malzahn had no interest or little interest in that. Big-money donors and trustees are necessary. They have a say. They have say at Auburn. They have it at Alabama. They have at any big-time program you can name.

Like I said.. Some I believe, some I don't and some I under see the issue with even if they we're true. I think its funny its all coming out as they try to sell Steele as the fix for all of Gus problems though.

Just for thought in response to that.. IF its true Gus controlled all assistant hires.. What would you say was the success rate of those hires? Garner, TWill, McGriff, Woodson, Porter etc..

That lines up with what has been talked around here for the past 8 years.

I remember reading when Muschump came in, there was zero organization around defensive recruiting.

I agree we've heard most if not all of it before. I've never believed it all though.. Coaches we're afraid to speak up because they might lose their jobs? Anyone on this staff would have been snatched up in a second by someone else. Garner or Twill afraid to speak up? Not buying that part.

Why did McGriff leave to be DC at Ole miss and came back to be DB coach because if its so horrible working for Malzahn?

The timing of it and the pushing of Steele just seems suspicious to me. Maybe its just me though.

Thanks for the post.

I don’t believe most of the post in the sense that I feel some of Gus’s qualities were exaggerated to be faults..some tidbits even reek as message board fodder. I do believe some were true, but I don’t see Steele fixing any issues

I’m just gonna do rivals next year. 247 is pretty boring.

TWill is already being sought after by SC.. Garner and TWill will have college football coaching jobs for life if they want to.
