Just my $.02

I was at 247 for many years and IMO Ron is full of it. He makes a ton of money off the coaching carousel every year and purposely misleads.

It’s reasonable to believe Mario used Auburn for a raise but it doesn’t mean we weren’t ready for it.

That's why I think Cristobal is number 1. If Oregon comes up with the money to keep him then good for them. If not I think he wants back down here.

They’re negotiating, but Cristobal is making $2.5mil as Oregon HC. Surely we can top that.

Can one of you go read 07's post? Someone random is claiming he posted Herbert is pushing hard for Steele. Yellow fellow is looking out for us and countering this a-hole.

He is the one that pushed that Malzahn disastrous contract with that a-hole Leath. That idiot needs to go.

Harbert can get bent. He is the main reason for the bullshite contract we just got out of.

I think the idea is Steele would be cheaper than hiring any other new HC. Honestly it sounds to me like someone had an axe to grind with Gus and finally got enough support to get him out.. Only they had no real plan for what the next step was going to be.

Herbert shouldn't be allowed to give his opinion after pushing so hard for that Gus contract

Dishing out 21 million just to promote someone on our staff is about the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. Just a half assed attempt of firing but not replacing Gus.

If you’re going to spend the 21 million at least make it worthwhile. Will Steele be a bridge HC? Probably. But how far are we going to fall before he finally retires? 8-5 and apathetic is the reason why we thought Gus would be gone.

Bridging a coach isn’t like bridging a QB. You can build a team around a QB you plan to draft/sign, but you can’t build a roster around a coach that is only there to bridge the gap to the next one (especially when you have no idea who it will be).

That would be the stupidest fricking decision in Auburn history.

10 x’s more stupid as hiring a 5-19 coach from Iowa State.

Someone.said the other day that Cristobal is Kirby Smart. Did Kirby Smart not kick the hell out of Malzahn every year? For Auburn to compete year end and year out with Alabama, LSU, Florida or Georgia you have to recruit with them.
The talent gap between Auburn and those programs right Now is light years. We need a serious recruiter. Cristobal and Napier are serious recruiters.

I do think Cristobal is very similar to Kirby Smart. He clearly is a lights out recruiter and is going to build both lines of scrimmage which is a great recipe for winning. But recruiting alone is not going to win Championships. While Kirby has owned Auburn because 1) he has clearly out-recruited Gus and 2) because he clearly had Gus' offense figured out, he has fallen flat on his face against Alabama and LSU. He really hasn't won any big games when the talent levels are equal. We aren't about to out-recruit any of those teams, so in the end you are going to need a coach that can prepare/scheme and get it done on Gameday.

Solving the recruiting piece, but not having a coach that can actually win big games in the SEC with similar talent is not going to please any of us. If anything it will be even more disappointing to have all the hype and talent in the world and still not get it done against our rivals.

To finish the UGA comparison, they have out-recruited us for the past 20 years, but we have more championships and undefeated seasons than they do. Auburn has always been the school that competed with the elite programs without ever quite recruiting with them. But I do understand that the talent gap is becoming larger than ever at the top level. I will get behind Cristobal if he is the hire, but I will be very interested in who is OC/DC hires are and if he can actually win the big games, because he has not done that at Oregon yet.
