I was good with Mario although I think his program would have to be a lights out recruiting operation rather than an excellently coached one (like Kirby/UGA).

Thats what would have happened Mario for all accounts is a worse game day coach than Gus.

The man can recruit lights out but his actual game day coaching needs a LOT of work. Personally im glad we didnt offer 7m.

Im down for Sark, Kiffin, or Freeze... In this order.

Anyone who can look at the absolute garbage program UDub was when Sark took over and think he was "merely ok" has me at a loss for words.

UDub was atrocious. And he took them to respectability even though he was so drunk he could barely walk straight.

I just dont see how you can say Sark, who took over a UDub program that had gone 11-37 in the 4 years prior, including 0-12 in the year immediately before he took over and almost had them in a bowl year 1 was just ok. He went bowling every season after his first season at UW. He was 1 game short of a bowl year 1... After going 0-12 the prior year.

He did such a meh job USCw came calling for him to be their HC... Where he promptly went 9-4 at his only full season there before his demons got the better of him.

He has done such a meh job that he has worked under Pete Carroll multiple times. He then worked for Saban MULTIPLE times.

But sure he is just ok

You need an article to gauge the personality of a 45 year old man who's on Twitter trolling like he's 18 years old? He is perpetually immature
And Ole Miss will be whipping our arse in the foreseeable future if we hire Kevin Steele or some other bum like the University is known to do.

Campbell is that he's a pure Midwest guy with no ties to this region

He's never recruited down here

I see this all the time, but it's crap. Did Urban have a hard time recruiting when he came from Utah, Les when he came to LSU or Saban?

ETA-

1- Lane Kiffin
2- Lane Train
3- Kiffin
4- Napier
5- Campbell
6- Fickell - but think he'll run home to OSU
7- Mario
8- Sark

That probably has more to do with him being stuck in Ames, Iowa than anything. You're not gonna convince a lot of kids outside of the Midwest to spend 3-4 years of their youth in Ames. It's not like Iowa St. is a powerhouse program.

No, it's his style/personality. He's not a recruiting guy and never has been. The football coach first/"coach-em-up" second/recruiting third thing works where he's at, but you can't run that type of game plan in this division and expect to "out-coach" Alabama. Recruiting in this region also requires a network and connections and he's never had any exposure to that; what would his staff theoretically be?

Minnesota is like ~20-25 spots higher in the recruiting rankings and they're not even having a good season, and they offer the same obstacles of being way up North in a non-traditional football state. I'm not saying that being at Iowa State isn't an obvious challenge for recruiting; but there's valid and obvious concerns with him from that angle.

Its not "crap". There are coaches like Urban and Saban who possess the chops to transcend and do it because that's their thing. Those aren't counter-points, they're two of the most successful coaches in modern history.

Your point of Les Miles actually proves the point. He took over a sure-thing that Saban left in a state with no competition and succeeded for a while going against a guy like Tuberville. What happened once Saban came back? Les Miles didn't last long and he's not coaching there anymore because he couldn't hang against a real wolf. Not only is Malzahn not leaving a "good situation" like Miles inherited, but the recruiting landscape is even more difficult today in this conference than it was when Miles was "succeeding".

You then also have examples like Brett Bielema who was super successful at Wisconsin and thought he could just carry that over to the SEC West. Same "Midwest" style of tough/physical football that doesn't work in this conference without the Jimmy's and Joe's to implement it.

Did Les Miles recruit well at LSU? That’s the point.

Belima is irrelevant.

Minneapolis/St. Paul and Ames couldn't be more different.

If he was the guy we’d be announcing today. No reason to wait.

We’re hiring Steele. It’s happening and I’m melting.

Not really.

I really don’t see how you think Napier is eliminated and Steele isn’t by not announcing yet.

We could’ve announced Steele Monday if we wanted to.

He recruited well for a while at a program that already had a recruiting foundation set in place, at a program with strong instate football talent and no instate competition. His SEC West "competition" was Tommy Tuberville who was also looking super hot.

What happened to Les Miles' recruiting once Saban came back? He got his clock cleaned and hence he was let go. Just like Tuberville. The SEC is now littered with recruiting HC's and Auburn has none of the insulation that LSU offers from a recruiting standpoint, so I fail to see what your point even is.

Bielema was a highly successful Midwest coach with zero ties to the South (just like Campbell) who played "Midwest Football" just like Campbell does and tried to bring that over to the SEC West and failed.

You think a comparison to Urban Meyer is more apt LMAO? Campbell is nothing like Meyer and his teams don't play anything alike. He's also never proven to be anywhere near Saban as a recruiter so lets lay off the absurd comparisons.

I don't think Campbell wants to coach in the south. If he takes another job, it will likely be in the mid-west.

Comparing Iowa State recruiting to Iowa this year, Iowa State is ranked 52nd with 19 recruits. Iowa is ranked 22nd with 17 recruits.

Also, he has never beat Iowa.

How were Saban’s “Midwest” classes before LSU?

Really? Are these guys even trying anymore?

I should’ve been a beat writers/insider. Grab a name, toss it out there, claim “sources”, job done.
