Why has he not been a bigger part of the pass game? He caught everything thrown at him, he gives 150%, obvious elite athlete (pro baseball), and from what my lay person knowledge of football could see gave 150% every time out.
Thoughts brethren?

His time is now. He'll get his passes this year.

Who would he have started over?
Duke?
Sammie?
Ricardo?
CJ?
Duke?
Sammie?
Ricardo?
CJ?

He's mostly been a blocker to this point because of how good he is at it.
He was new in 2013. We ran a lot. Sammie and Ricardo were our top options, with CJ on the goal line, Marcus Davis from the slot.
Last season we had two NFL WRs in Duke and Sammie and didn't spread it around much beyond them.
He'll have a bigger role this season, he'll be rewarded as a senior. I really think he'll emerge as the #2 behind Duke this season. Even if he doesn't we'll spread the ball around passing more with JJ.
I think the main WR's you'll see and their roles will look like this:
Duke #1
Melvin Ray #2
Marcus Davis, slot
Ricardo, deep threat/ sweeps and reverses/ trick plays.
What will be interesting to see is how Jason Smith will fit in. I think he has the talent to be a dynamic #1, and should be for sure next season with Duke, Ray, and Ricardo graduating.

You bought into my hype thread on the rant about Ray didn't you?

My thought is it's impossible to give 150%

Ray is certainly an asset we need to take full advantage of. We might all recall his catch and run against FSU although we should block the entire game out of memory.
I'll be honest, I don't see Ricardo having the skill or size to be a consistent threat on our offense. He's similar in character to Ontario. We might target Duke or Melvin a few times, then use Ricardo on a fancy sweep play...I hope Ricardo does become the player that kills drives due to over-thought out play calling.

Ricardo is 6'2 217. OMAC was 5'11 160.

Last year you could tell he had been away from the game a while. Good hands, but a stiff route runner. My guess is this year he is more comfortable in the passing game.

Didn't most of MRs catches come from JJ last year?

I've heard for a while now that JJ and MR have a pretty good dynamic, so hopefully we'll see that with JJ at the helm.

Has that actually been said by anyone outside this board? I feel like that's only been based off the arky game.

I remember hearing it in 2013

JJ completed one pass to Ray and like 7 to Duke.

I know OMAC was considerably lighter than Ricardo, but I would say their playing styles are quite similar. I would not expect to see Ricardo out-muscle a defender, but instead try and slip by them via speed and quickness.
Melvin's frame seems more built for contact and physicality...which I like to see more in a WR, IDK about Gus though.

The JJ/MR chemistry was talked about in 2013. They got a lot of reps together because they were both backups and Ray was JJ's favorite target in practice. I specifically remember some practice notes saying to watch out for the that connection in the future.

When you put the ball in someones court, they either run with it or they dont. We will know pretty soon I believe with Melvin Ray. I think he can play. Once he realizes that he is being counted on to run routes and catch balls, I think he will respond in a positive manner
He made some big plays. Just was not a big part of the offense. He will be this year I believe.
