Look, I laid it out for you. Im not saying he would not be a good coach. We really dont know. I just gave you the facts so saying its some kind of grand slam hire is silly. It has its questions.
I'm not saying it would be a grand slam hire. But my thing is, I'm not sure what would be a grand slam hire that is within the realm of possibility.
quote:Like, I get the sentiment, but this to me seems even riskier than a guy like Cristobal. As we're having to reckon with now, recruiting is the lifeblood of college programs and NFL guys don't have to deal with that. Give me an HC who's a good recruiter and can go out and get good scheming coordinators over a guy who's made it to the NFL as a good O or D mind
Id rather see them bring someone in from the NFL

He's definitely a coach I think we can hire who is better than Gus.

The most Auburn thing we could do would be to fire Gus and promote Kevin Steele to head coach. So I think that is what will happen.

Haha. Highly likely.
He would keep the entire staff, promote TWill to DC, and hire a LB coach.

That would be so gutting...why are we so damn afraid of taking risks? It's the reason we ended up with Gus to begin with...because we kinda knew what we were getting in him. So a solution that removes Gus but keeps 90% of the rest of the program as is ridiculous, and unfortunately, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if it happened.

How soon till Dell McGee is ready to be a head coach? Huge fan of his.

I’m gonna agree with Lanier here. I’m not interested in hiring people who lose to Gus unless they have an extensive resume/upside like Saban or something.
The risk isn’t worth the cost.

Disagree. The most Auburn thing would be to hire Rhett Lashlee. Book it.
Cristobal ain't coming, so quit dreaming.

Yeah, this would be pretty Auburn too.
It's hilarious because with both Gus and Rhett, neither would even be in consideration had they not been OC's here before. It's absolutely ludicrous thinking.

I mean, it was a 6-point loss on a last second play in the first game of the season. His team ended up moving on from that loss to eventually beating the shite out of #5 Utah as the lower ranked team and winning the PAC10 title, and then beating #8 Wisconsin to win the Rose Bowl (a team that routinely humiliates us in Bowl games). Our team of course went on from a huge win which should have catapulted us that year to...eventually losing to Florida, LSU, Georgia, and Minnesota.
His "upside" is certainly significant enough to overlook one game that they barely lost to us. Go check out Oregon's recruiting under Cristobal. And this is a guy from the South who spent 4 seasons at Alabama as the AHC/RC so he already understands what this recruiting landscape is like.

He and Joe Brady are my top two potentially realistic choices.

Fleck would be great. He is a little cringy, but he wins.

Brady will most likely be an NFL coach in the next couple years.
Posted on 10/8/20 at 5:03 am to RandySavage
I don't have a list, but...........
we have a snowballs chance of getting either one of these guys. Brady went back to the NFL because he wants to coach in the NFL. Christobal isn't leaving Oregon for Auburn. I am sure he would like the bama job. You don't go from Auburn to bama.
ETA Fleck would be my #1 choice. We don't have a "realistic" chance of getting him.
