If Steven is the heir I’d love to see him go away for a couple years and then come back. Just somewhere doesn’t even have to be a head coach just out from under Bruce so he can round out his skills more. I’m sure someone would take a flyer on him as a D2 coach somewhere let him cut his teeth a little.
Who cares Steven can learn under Bruce and in 7 years this thing will run itself.

Riding. Pure joy. Special times.

If promising Steven the job is what it took to keep Bruce then I’m fine with it. Assuming that he stays the full 8 years with Bruce, he will have I think over 15 years of experience as an assistant coach

Hokanson’s take is that Bruce will go another 5-7 years and he also expects his son Steven to take over as HC when he does decide to leave.
I hope the take about Bruce is right.

I hope we don't regret this in 4 or 5 years.
It happened in football with our last two coaches. Coming off national title appearances and looking good. $30M in buyouts to fire two coaches.
Yes, I do believe Pearl is the real deal. He's built our program into a national program... but you never know. Many other SEC programs could catch us and we could become just mediocre, then we'll be here bitching about why we offered another coach this much money and buyout.
Yeah, I can be cynical and realistic.
The ride is fun as hell when you're winning. Everyone's happy and excited... that never lasts though. If somehow we get put out in the 2nd round this year, people will start calling for his head and hating on the program with a quickness. People are too emotional about sports.
Hopefully I'm wrong and just being contrarian. But you need to keep a level head about this stuff.

You saying it could never happen huh?
I hope I'm wrong and Pearl keeps Auburn in the top10 and keeps getting us deeeeeeep into the tourney for a long time.
Sports is fickle.

Agree. Let’s just enjoy what gave going now w Bruce.
‘Coach in waiting’ never works. There’s history to support it.
If Auburn stays at a high level when change is needed why would u bank on SP just bc of his fathers success. ?

Bruce Pearl = Pat Dye. He is a man that built an elite program from nothing. Not a guy who had one good season.
I don’t even need to read the rest of your post.

How’s UNC doing these days? Arizona?
In the past decade or so Zona has 3 Eite 8s, 5 Sweet 16s. Current they are ranked in the top 5 or so.
Pretty sure they are doing just fine

Probably said the same thing about Chizik and Gus.
Listen, I didn't want Pearl to leave. I do think the amount of money schools are paying coaches is ridiculous.
So you say it's okay to pay a coach $60M, or whatevee the deal was, and returning to irrevelance would be okay?
And you call my statement idiotic?
Ya'll are swept up in emotionm

That’s great, Arizona we are not. This thing does not run itself. Idiotic thing to say

Pearl completely turned this program from the biggest loser in the conference to the #1 team in the country. It’s the biggest rebuild this sport has seen since I’ve been alive.
So yes, if this sucker crashed and burned under Pearl, then so be it. Without him we never would’ve witnessed this success and the $60mm price tag was well worth every win we’ve already experienced.

Nah man. We are about to have our 4th 25+ win season in 5 years. This was an easy decision for everybody

With his personality he could be a full time AU spokesman and raise more money than our football coaches

No problem. Not everyone's going to be on the same page.
Football has a Randy, so I can see the value of a basketball Dan.
