Most say Gus started hot and faded as he went through the years. Thought it was an interesting stat below

Gus first 3 seasons - 27 wins
Gus last 3 seasons - 27 wins

** Excluding the 2020 Covid season of 6-4.

Close to half of the first 3 season total was the 2013 season

'15 was horrible. '18-'20 is inexcusable as well considering the program should have been coasting by then. As well as the talent level aside from the OL.

It's just an interesting stat. Goes in the face of everything that has been said that the program was fading or stale.

And yes we need O linemen. We need dynamic WRs and quality Safety depth.

Well the first 3 are pretty skewed by the 2013 season.

And as an offensive coach, he did flame out. His offenses were great in the beginning and we used to say "Man just wait till he finds a DC! We will be unstoppable"

Then he found a DC and his offense started sucking

I would like to see the comparison of 2013-14 vs the other 6 years.

Maybe he made a calculated judgement that I need to keep my defense fresh and not go as fast on offense. Win with field position and FGs. averaging 9-3 is a pretty dang good record regardless of program considering the schedule each year plus the out of conference P5 teams.

In no way am I saying that it wasn't time for a change. Just saying who is to say Gus didn't actually adjust his offense to protect the defense more.

Yeah I'm not trying to disparage your post in anyway. But the offense was certainly stale (maybe not the entire program) and that is a huge knock against Gus considering his background.

'13 and '17 win totals are the two seasons that balance each of those 3 yr blocks out. Everything outside of that was very, very average.

Averages are misleading. Gus may have averaged 9 wins but he only won 9 games 3 times in 8 seasons (this is counting 2020 but we wouldn't have won 9 games this year lol)

That's Auburn history in a nutshell. Every 10 years a possible undefeated season. A couple SEC championships or at least now with the championship game playing for a couple. A couple of average type years and a couple years where the roster turns over and are below average.

Hopefully we punch out 5-6 10 win+ seasons in a row. It'd be a nice change.

I mean you can only get by maintaining the average for so long. Nobody has ever said Gus was the worst coach in Auburn history, he just was never going to consistently get us to the next level

So you think if we played the usual MTSU, Samford, and Southern Miss as the cupcakes on a normal schedule we don't manage to win those?

Bama could run the I formation and still win 12 games a season. Georgia just did it up until this season and lost the NC in OT to bama.

Bama talent UGA talent > Auburn Talent. That is the biggest problem. Going into 2020 the Roster talent difference between Bama and Auburn is the same as the talent difference between Auburn and Kentucky. And UGA was rated 1, bama 2 entering the season based just on roster.

We lost to UA, UGA and A&M and would have lost to North Carolina probably. So that's 4 there. We'd have to win every single other game to get 9. And we'd likely lose a dumb one like South Car

IMO what did Gus in is all the missed chances to win games he should have won.

2014 A&M, Wisconsin
2015 arkie, uga
2016 uga
2017 LSU, UCF
2018 UTk
2019 UF
2020 USCe

Those are just a few examples.

I can't think of a single game he won that he wasn't supposed to win or at least weren't toss ups.

Not to mention the perplexing loses where he probably didn't have the best team but somehow was in the game but managed to lose anyway. 2016 Clemson, 2017 Clemson, 2018 LSU, etc...

Auburn's average wins per year in the history of the program

8-9 wins per season

In its history
