100% agree

And whoever is down voting, is it because the opinion expressed is incorrect in your mind or an unpopular, sucky but realistic option? I have no problems with being downvoted for the later reason because it does suck. But if it is for the former, then tell us what coordinator is worth the gamble in your opinion? But we should be real expecting established winning P5 coaches are probably not an option and upcoming lower tier coaches may not be an option.

It's really easy to type "let's fire the coach and replace him with a winner". But thee are not a lot of coaches out there that can be successful in the SEC. Just ask the other SEC programs outside of UGA (dammit to hell).

Same here... The figuring it out seems so easy to me, like don't be predictable with the play calls without the right personnel. Let some of the younger talent play when the other guys are sucking. Don't settle for field goals in the red zone. Try having a bad week of practice once or twice.

We have a gambler!!

Locksley has looked good in his 2 games this year but he is 3-31 head coach record outside of his wins over Howard and Syracuse this year.

I do appreciate you presenting an option.

I like Aranda a lot, although I'm not convinced I want to ditch Gus, pay a huge buyout and hire him. If Gus had a 5 million buyout it'd be a different story.

In the "B" category there are a handful of "gettable" options, although most have question marks and I'm listing some only on the basis of them having/continuing to have success this season: Mendenhall, Satterfield, Campbell, Fleck, Brohm. I'm not aware of any of them having great SEC territory connections and they're boring in various ways. However, I'd be pretty surprised if a couple of them don't have a successful run at an equivalent-level program in the next 5-10 years.

It's a gamble, as you know some in that category are likely to hit once they have coached at a couple of schools and had continued success. But which ones? Honestly, we should just call this the Butch Jones category.

I never answered the original question.

B. Malzahn to stay but hire a real OC (and throw the bank at Pittman at UGA and hire a real WR coach).

How desirable would we be for a real OC? Would they trust Gus to let them coach and not taint their reputation?

I'm not saying you're wrong with this idea, but it just seems so repetitive/depressing.

I agree. It was mainly my "wish list of things to change next year if we are 8-5".

Honestly, Gus will need to hire a real OC at some point if he wants to succeed at Auburn. But I think we all agree on this.

I think getting Pittman (or some big time oline recruiter and coach) and a real WR coach is the real need for next year.

I just think that when you're having to dictate to HCs what changes are needed, especially over and over, you're only prolonging the inevitable.

And maybe that's what we're doing considering the buyout.

Someone that doesn’t get a delay of game on the first play after half time.

Why would a real wr coach come to auburn?

Probably so. And usually the writing is on the wall when you do dictate staff changes. Those are usually last resort.

But I do think we (like I have ANY input ) need to examine all options before shelling out $30M and then looking for a coach will to come here with what we can afford to pay him and his staff.

I am concerned any coaching search would look like Tennessee's search (please God, not THAT bad), we hire someone like Pruitt and stay with that coach for 4 seasons wishing we had Gus and that money back.

I know someone wrote in jest anyone who would not delay of game on the first play after half time, but Gus is far from the worst coach out there. Hell, I was for Taggart in the past.

Why would a real wr coach come to auburn? Good point. Maybe we can get at least a former WR to coach receivers....

Gus has a high floor. I mean, he's better than merely that, but it's something I don't really worry about with him. I don't go into these seasons thinking we could go 4-8 with Gus. I just go into them thinking it's low risk/low reward. So I agree that's a hurdle to clear if we're talking about replacing him.

But for perspective, in the past 6 years Dan Mullen had three 9+ win seasons (including 2 at MSU). Butch Jones had 2 at Tennessee. Sumlin had 2 in his years at A&M. Gus has 2. In fairness, most of those guys had lower-lows than Gus.

But I think we give a lot of credit (appropriately) for 2013 and people think about Gus Malzahn's teams as being in the Sugar Bowl, or beating Saban or being top 10 in October, etc. But when you look purely at the results, especially since 2013, and especially considering his record against our rivals, he looks really, really replaceable.

The way I see it, Aranda might have been a bit of a question mark when I was naming him to replace Muschamp when he dashed to USCe (Aranda was still at Wisconsin at the time). But now that he has shown success at LSU, I think he would be a great hire, and he is most likely just waiting for a job like Auburn to come calling.

I see him as a coach with a careful understanding of the game, and I would trust him to build a staff that would fortify his preferences on offense.

I like Aranda, but LSU DC is one of the easiest gigs out there. Look at Chief’s fall from grace since leaving.
