How do we set ourselves up to recruit in the portal henceforth?

Since August over 2000 kids have hit the portal, we still have 5 months to go before its annual, plus as more kids understand the portal, as we move forward expect more to enter each year.

But this year, there will be another wave after spring ball across the country, so make it 2500 total individuals. Now these arent, potential high school recruits, these are kids who have gotten a scholly, and believe they can improve their lot in life with an upgrade.

We have hired someone to be our portal recruiter. Hmm, I certainly hope he is a point man for an entire team to focus on players who might enter the portal whom we would like. Otherwise, with 2500 kids its not even enough time to evaluate one hour of tape of each in an entire year, much less call them, visit them, build a relationship.

And the relationship must develop before they hit the portal, the good ones will have already picked a home.

We may not like it, I certainly dont, but there are 20 free agents on the LA Rams this year, keep that in mind.

This is the key, IMO. And it starts in high school.
The well recruited guys kinda know where they’ll go if plan A doesn’t work out before they ever even get to college.

The other set of guys we’re also missing out (and mostly on offense) on are the small school kids. Opportunity is imperative but they’re also going places that have momentum— something Auburn seems to be struggling to establish.

Auburn has quietly hired a lot of people in the recruiting department since Harsin’s first season. I’m guessing this hire emerged from a need to separate out some of the portal recruitment and I wouldn’t be surprised if we learn that this guy belongs to a wider team of staffers

With our basketball team the portal has kids transferring in. With the football team the opposite appears to be true. So you have to ask why kids want to play basketball at Auburn but not football.

I don’t think this is a mystery

Win games, yes. And to my point about top kids knowing their plan B before they ever get on campus at plan A… Walker Kessler.

And we were able to get Zep and Wendell Green Jr from small schools because they were looking for opportunity and wanted to play for a team with momentum. And Auburn bball had that in abundance last off season.

This isn’t necessarily rocket science. You’re not going to get WR transfers without a QB. OL transfers don’t want play on a line where the guys next to them suck. And the QB situation exacerbates everything in offense.

We’ll see what happens after spring ball with the transfer market. But we’re gonna need some good things to go our way this season or during the off season. And that feels like a tall task right now

I heard a rumor that NIL Auburn is the standard bearer of the future of NIL.

Not sure I agree but whatever. I'm sure someone is making money.

My neighbor works on the development and implementation team for Auburn NIL (and some other schools like Penn State).

He said it's nuts and that Auburn NIL is one of just a few schools really blazing a trail and doing things other schools' NIL programs haven't grasped yet. Though it is a lot of learning as they go. The hardest part, apparently, is the fact that you're trying to get the point across to 18-22 year old kids that they can't just sit back and receive money. They actually have to earn it on some level.

I'm going with this definition....

As usual Jones you articulate it better than I. But we should be treating the portal like we do regular high school kids. I know we are not supposed the actively recruit, but it certainly does not keep us from maintaining relationships with the kids we wanted who went elsewhere, whether it be through their coaches, other players etc. Then if the time comes for them to look at the portal....they reach out.

I look at the new "portal recruiting division" similar to the Pittsburgh Steelers of the early 70s. When Noll got there they drafted the big names like Swann, but they also had a group of people looking at small schools, many historically black (remember this is the early 70s), where a lot of kids did not have the opportunity to get schollys from the bigger schools. Thats where they picked up the John Stallworths and Mean Joe Greenes.

The portal may be where you plug some holes if you are Alabama or Georgia, but its going to be our bread and butter for a couple of years til our high school recruiting gets on campus and seasoned. Particularly places like the OL where everyone is gone after this season.

He say anything about what A&M is doing vs. us?

Would be interested to know how they've been so insanely successful with it.

I thought y’all were all good with this?

And like I mentioned earlier in the thread Auburn NIL is supposed to be some standard bearer of NIL. Yet Eku had never even heard of our NIL until a couple weeks ago.

Agree. I highly doubt it was 32 million, thats remarkably close to the number of players they signed at a mil a piece so someone threw that out there and they ran with it. Wouldnt doubt around 4 or 5 million.

Utah, to your point, Saban said it and transfer portal would make a mess of college ball. They scoffed and said he was wrong, just worried all those 4 and 5 stars on the bench would bolt in the portal. He said no they wont, the good ones know their time will come at the best program in college....insert Mac Jones. He said instead the undiscovered players who are balling will want to transfer to the better schools....and this year he signed out of the portal the number one receiver, DB, and running back.

Ive spoken til blue in the face about being prepared for the portal and NIL, yet we seem to think its the coaches missing some friggin dinner at some event and not the millions other programs are tossing out there. Well guess we can get some free haircuts and spin some records at our new facility eh? I say in jest, but 10 year depreciation on a 90 million facility gets us 9 million a year we could have floated to recruits.........
