Former Auburn football players were sent this letter today by Gus Malzahn. The coach is trying to open the door more to the past. Here’s the letter:

Dear Former Players, We just finished up the spring season with A-Day on Saturday. For the first time, we had a 7-on-7 Auburn Legends game, and it was a huge success. We appreciate all the guys involved this year and will continue the A-Day Legends game moving forward.

Our theme this year is “Ride for the Brand.” We are putting Auburn first in everything we do and making a strong emphasis on our core values. We will have the Auburn Creed hanging in every players’ locker and in every coaches’ office.

I really appreciate everyone who came to Lettermen’s Day earlier this spring. We had more than 200 former players on the sidelines. That afternoon, I had a chance to visit with a few of you, and it was very insightful. I realized I need to make it a priority to keep you more informed as to what is going on in our program. I want all former players to always feel welcome. With that said, each month you will receive updates on our program from me and my staff.

I’d like to invite you to come to our fall camp practices this August. I will send you those dates once they are set. I am also looking into opening some practices during the season and will be in touch as we get closer.

This will be my 10th year at Auburn, and I love this place. This program would not be what it is today without you. Thank you for all you have done to make Auburn great!

War Eagle!

Good move on his part. Hope the coach we hire next year continues this policy.

Interesting comment from Mr Cry Me A River. You fall off of your soap box for a minute?

I’d settle for Gus just going back to what works offensively and banging out a 10 win season.
The defense is finally above average and our program is disciplined. He’s shown signs of growth in coaching acumen and maturity and he’s on the cusp of being a great coach.

May not happen. Who knows.

Hope you are right, Jang. I love the guy, but I'm afraid he cant seem to put all the pieces together at one time. To his credit he does show signs from time to time which gives me hope.

Yep. So damn tantalizing. Gus is super paranoid for example and would never consider opening up practice on his own volition. I think the AD is steering him some in the right direction.

Gus has to help himself out though. Can’t effectively win back support until the wins (even on the road and against rivals) start coming.

Also, Gus has really only enjoyed one good offseason of recruiting stability after his first couple years. Another good season this year would add more distance between the talk of bad contracts and provide more stability which is what the contract was intended to provide in the first place.

I’m not going down that rabbit hole with you. Gus has made his fair share of decisions that I’ve brought up in the past that you chose to ignore.

Stick to your market rate moron quips.

Gus is kinda like Trump. No matter what he does, there will be some that will never accept him or admit they were wrong about him. Plus, he could cure cancer on Pat Dye field and he would still be judged because of a shitty loss 3 years ago

Its comical at times. A little frustrating at others. It is always "focus on the bad things" these days. People do no like being wrong or being proved wrong. Even if it benefits them

No basis for this, just thinking out loud.

Under Jacobs, who was part of the good ole boy and booster network, Gus had to answer to boosters who could/did undermine him (whether real or perceived) and caused a spike in his paranoia. He saw former players as others who could also undermine him for whatever reason.

AD Greene comes in and isn’t beholden to the same boosters as Jacobs. Gus begins to feel more job security.

Now, there’s something missing here but Gus sees the benefit of former players instead of them as potential enemies. Maybe he’s less paranoid now than he used to be. Maybe Garner and T-Will convinced Gus of the benefit.

I'd argue that basketball/Bruce have also influenced Gus. Before we had a good season, Bruce built up support by being so damn likeable. Even that dipshit AU24 who thought Bruce was a bad coach was pro Pearl

Even when Gus wins people hate it and I think a big part is how unlikeable he has been. He gives nothing to the fans

No kidding

My first impression was "NICE, ICE COLD" and then I saw it was posted by our resident safe space college student so I'm not sure what to think

The only letter I’m interested in from Gus is a resignation letter

The best time to plant a tree was 10 years ago, the next best time is today.. I guess the same could be said about this letter.

There's an a Shug-era OL who attends my church, he said Gustav was very welcoming to former players when he took over as HC, so this isn't exactly a huge change.

More than likely Greene persuaded him to make a little bigger of a deal of it this year.
