Our women’s soccer team is undefeated this year, ranked 11th nationally and is playing against UAB tonight at 6:30 on SEC Network+ (can access via ESPN App). You should watch it and consider it as practice to find the Auburn v Akron game on Saturday when it is also televised on SEC Network+

Both of my daughters play travel soccer so this is also something I am super interested in.

Also, USMNT plays El Salvador tonight in first World Cup qualifying game of the year.

But, all of you frickers don’t care about the world’s best and biggest sport, so this will probably hit deaf ears

I'm walking to the Weber St. vs. Utah game right now. My buddy Magaji has his tailgate across the street from Rice-Eccles. The $80mm renovation is done and the Utes should once again compete for the PAC-12 this year.

I’m trying to watch soccer many times, but it is so fricking boring that I just can’t get more than about 10 minutes before I fall asleep

Man, I hated travel soccer. I can remember leaving the house at 6:30 AM & getting home at 11:00 PM. Destroys the weekends.

But guess what happens, it ends up going pretty fast. I got to watch my both my girls (no pics) on the same HS team win state. When my youngest daughter lost the her last game to miss state last year...it was over. 19 years of dragging chairs and coolers across the southeast, hundreds of games...poof, gone. Not going to lie, I got a little choked up when she came off the field the last time.

Still got a boy, he hates soccer though. Just Lacrosse and guitar for him.

Good for those girls. But any sport that you can be penalized for out hustling a defender (offsides) is a head scratcher.

Man they were still working on it when I was out there in late June. Hope they finally have some playmakers on offense.

So if a player is ahead of the defender before the ball is kicked that is not offsides?

Yeah, I am not really sure why they ever chose to make offsides a rule. Has always seemed kind of dumb.

I know the feeling. I coached my oldest daughter for many years. The last game for me to ever coach her was in a rainstorm with lightning all around - I got very emotional coaching her knowing it would be my last game with her in that role. Now I am passing her on to much more knowledgable people that can further her in the sport of soccer much better than I ever could, so now my role is as a supportive parent. THis is our first year in travel soccer. Between that and everything else we have, I will probably be watching most of the Auburn games this year on my phone, while at the soccer fields.

That's not out hustling was my contention. Out hustling is being even with the defender when ball is played and beating them to goal. That's how my HS team won many a game back in the day. We had a forward that could run a 4.4(ish). He camp at the half and we'd play the ball right over his head. He'd win every time. That's out hustling.

Like any strange rule in any sport (icing in hockey, only certain players are eligible receivers in football) the strange rule exists to prevent certain strategies from taking hold and producing a less interesting version of the game. The miracle of soccer is that offsides is really the only strange rule. That and the rules surrounding when a goal keeper can and can't pick the ball up. Every other aspect of soccer is natural and straight forward. You could deliver all meaningful soccer rules on a single page.

Football, on the other hand, exists in a completely unnatural space with an encyclopedia of rules hemming it in on all sides. The care takers of the game have carved out a very specific vision of the product they want to see. In my mind, they have succeeded in giving people what they really want and we all enjoy it.

But as I get older I am drawn to the slow continuous burn of soccer. Something about it has overtaken my love of American football. This might be due to the trauma and apathy hammered into me by Gus after 2013.

Yep been following our daughter around for the last 8 years in volleyball. At her college tournament now as a freshman.

It does go fast and such a short time to enjoy it.
