I went and watched a couple games of Montgomery’s offense. Base run game is zone, split zone, outside stretch zone, with some speed sweeps. Appears he wants a power run game but the team struggled running power. I think smaller backs with good vision and speed would work best for the overall offense but there is a spot for a power back as well. We need a diverse group of backs to really make the run offense go.

Passing game is similar to Freeze a more complex route tree and combo routes than what Malzahn ran. Same as Free in passing concepts to be one side field reads with combo routes to put defender in single coverage or choosing what guy to jump in zone. One side field reads does not and repeat one side field reads do not mean basic means your 1,2 and possibly 3rd read is all on one side of the field with multiple reads. The passing concepts have a lot more crossing and drags them from Malzahn. A lot of the concepts put eye candy in front of the line backers and safeties to put them in conflict to cover their area or cover the person they see in front.

This is the first basic breakdown for now. I’ll try to watch more but very encouraging offensive design. A lot will depend on many variables how well it works in year 1 depending on oline, QB, and WR play. I could see where any position on offense would attract top personnel.

I will also look deeper into the Freeze/Montgomery offense after A-Day on their base concepts.

After watching the Trovon Reed interview and his comments on Freeze, and now reading your post about his OC hire........HOLD ONTO YOUR HATS! Looks like we have a MAJOR upswing coming!

This is just a conceptual look at the offense. We still need dudes to run the thing and to be as explosive as it can be.

Will add Montgomery seems to be an above average to very good in game play caller as well working off of other successful routes used in games to setup big plays later on.

It’s little things in offense that go a long way. Can we average 5 yards per carry. Can we limit QB pressures to less than 8 a game. Limit sacks to 2 or fewer per game.

And Lord knows you can draw up a great play for big yardage and the WR turn his head too quickly and drop the ball. All those will need to be addressed as well.

Increase in talent, consistency, and production all work in conjunction

We will also need a decent QB that can throw. His offense with a decent QB & WRs can be prolific. It is capable of scoring pretty quickly if assignments are missed and it does put pressure on a D. More like UT was this year. The future looks bright. The route trees have me more excited. Need a good WR coach and good route running.

As long as we get one of Leary or McCall I like the chances of fielding a great offense next year. Get one of them and the linemen and skill players will follow, if they aren’t already on the way.

I read in another forum that McCall camceled his visit when he learned Leary was also visiting?

True or false?

He canceled because of an academic snag is the story.

Some issue with transferring credits

Been hashed out pretty thoroughly in the recruiting thread. Has nothing to do with Leary. It’s an academic issue. It appears he doesn’t have enough credits towards a degree at Auburn at the moment. JLee said there’s still a chance he could get eligible here but would likely be after the spring semester.

I watched 2 full Tulsa games and 1 liberty game over the past few days.

Montgomery and Freeze should mesh very well. Offense is very similar with similar concepts there should be no conflict of interest with either. Freeze runs the ball a little more Montgomery passes a little more. I think the quality of running backs available at Auburn will make us just a hair run heavy but I think both coaches will be fine with that.

Differences - Freeze uses an H-back/TE more and spreads the field with WRs. Montgomery uses bunch sets on both sides of the OL out a 4 wide set a lot. I would expect we would use more H-back/TE in our base. Who is the H-back? Is it Sean Jackson? or Luke Deal? I'm sure the new TE will play a factor some there but I have no idea how he blocks inside. Freeze tends to use more motion then Montgomery.

Similarities - Both are no huddle guys but aren't really hurry up guys, both are check with me coaches, they do vary tempo but rarely go full nascar mode. Both seem to work levels well in man to man and both have good zone beaters as well as sit down routes. Both use some crossing routes but less then I expected over the course of a game. Both take 6-8 shot plays out of the pass game but have intermediate levels to go along with them. Freeze and Montgomery's run game will look very similar to Malzahn's.

My take is they will be kind of 40-40 guys. Wanting 80 plays per game with good pace and 40 rushes and 40 passes. Reality I think we will lean 45 rush 35 pass the first couple years until they have time to develop their own QBs and OL.

I will go ballistic if PM gets away from the Freeze use of the TE. That is a tad bit of a concern.

He doesn't "not" use a TE he just doesn't use them in the backfield in a run set. We may have to go spread/bunch sets because of a lack of a true H-back.

I don't think our first portal guy would have been the top TE if we weren't planning on using TEs. Fairweather is a little bit of a hybrid TE. Big Slot/TE I would think Fromm would be his backup or possibly King. We will still have hand on ground TE's but need a versatile H-back. That's why I suggested Sean Jackson he's played H-back before in high school when Armoni Goodwin transferred to HT and Sean moved to H-back and was an absolute terror.

A huge contrast between the two is the use of RB’s in the passing game. Freeze loves to throw the ball to RB’s whereas Monty seems to be almost allergic to the idea.

Bunch and stack sets are great against man coverage. Puts them especially stacked at the end of the line of scrimmage in all that traffic difficult for the defense to swap out coverage on cross or rub routes.

I like both I want TE's and I want 4 wides in bunch sets. More multiple and harder to game plan for.

Great thing is he is Cole(two in the)Pinkston’s son.

Follow Corch Pinkston around and you’re in hog heaven.

Edit( Corch, personally I find your LAMP boring. I’ve already summoned BLZR to take care of that.

I just want our Evan Engram. I've been told he's been on the way since Tuberville, but haven't seen such (since Fred Baxter).

I see many passing redzone TDs and TD dances by divas coming our way man.
