Hoke is quoted as saying that observers have said Zach Calzada has been too inconsistent.

Oh boy.

All of the QB transfers Bryan Harsin had a chance to go after and he chose one that is currently being beaten out by TJ Finley

Admittedly, I had high hopes for Zach Calzada after seeing him beat both Auburn and Alabama last season (mostly Alabama). We saw what potential could be there.

I think we were all also hoping he could come in and take the job after seeing how the season unfolded with TJ Finley at QB, losing 5 in a row after a 6-3 start… I think we also all thought Zach Calzada would win it pretty easily.

Hopefully TJ Finley has actually improved and isn’t the same as last year. No idea if that’s true, though. He wasn’t good in 2020 and also wasn’t good in 2021. We’ll see.

I have plenty of saved threads. I ain’t getting into that until I have to.

Someone here said this recently:

Lol, no. Bo has more games played and with better talent. He is a bum. And just to clarify, I said Calzada has more upside. I said Ashford is more talented. And the original point is Shrimp made a ridiculous statement that Bo would be the best QB on our roster. He would be 4th

I’m gonna wait until next Saturday the day after scrimmage 2 before I start trying to guess who the starting QB is. However I thought it would go down in the end Calzada, TJ, Ashford.

But if the coaches thinks someone is better at giving us a chance to win I’ll pull for that guy. We are probably about the half way point in the competition and seems it’s TJ, Ashford, Calzada at this point.

Y’all member when D. Davis was the best QB on the roster last year?

Y’all member when Barrett Trotter was pushing Cam to be QB1?

I member.

I’ll wait until next weekend before I start thinking anyone has anything locked down. Next week should be a real competition without Holden and the non scholly players taking equal snaps. So you get the top 3 rotating with the 2 deep and go from there. Anything could happen.

After the media talks with some of the players and if we can get a sneak peek in what they saw or say then I will see if Rig can roll this thread into the fall thread. Before Scrimmage 2

Bryan Harsin notes from Stultz:
quote:

We are set to speak with Bryan Harsin after the first scrimmage of fall camp. Follow along for all updates.

- Situational scrimmage. Got some live action in. Execution improved. Played a lot of guys. Let guys tackle live. See what they can do with moving the ball down the field. They handled it well.

- The effort was there.

- Damari Alston ran the ball well, he stood out. Camden Brown also stood out. Two freshmen that played well.

- Tar'Varish Dawson and Shenker had a couple of catches.

- Finley operated well. Had a long drive on first drive. 14 plays. Executed well.

- Robby Ashford also did well. Operated the huddle well.

- Calzada was solid.

- Anders Carlson was 4-for-4 on field goal.

- Derick and Eku were coming off the edge really well.

- Craig McDonald picked up a fumble and ran it back for 95 yards. Doesn't know which linebacker caused the fumble.

- Friday is next scrimmage.

- Overall, no decisions will be made. Monday is a day off for these guys. They start classes on Tuesday. That's when they will start pinpointing the depth chart.

- On TJ Finley: "I've always been impressed with TJ. He understands what we are trying to accomplish. Listens to the details. He remembers coaching points and will echo it."

- Jayson Jones is also a newcomer that stood out. Jeffrey M'ba is coming along. Morris is coming along as well. "Morris can play. He's not the biggest guy out there on the field but he understands the game."

- Marcus Bragg is getting more opportunities at the EDGE and on special teams.

- Keionte Scott "can play." He's catching up but has a lot of natural ability.

- Owen looked liked Owen tonight. Wesley Steiner is also having a great training camp. Cam Riley also standing out.

- On Damari: "He has a good feel for it (aiming point.) Great feel for when the play opens up to hit it. Good change of direction." Had a good burst around the edge tonight.

- Emphasis was on running the ball early. Tank was up against the first defense but did well.

- Offensive line was "solid." Overall, he thought there were not many negative plays. They came off the ball well.

- They have given every player a chance to show what they can do, and now they need to make some decision.

- "I wanted to see them lead." - That is what Harsin was looking for from the QBs. Only one delay of game. No really sloppy play from the QBs.

- Says what sucks is that you can't see the elusiveness of Ashford because the QBs aren't live.

- On wide receivers: "Camden is a young player that is catching our eye. Shed has had a good camp." That entire group, there have been no issues. They are working.

- Shed had a great catch in the scrimmage. Koy had one as well.

- "Timing is everything." - Harsin on when I asked about his tweet with the picture of him and Bruce last night.

- Eugene Asante is going to be a really good player for us. Robert Woodyard got beat on one play and then responded effectively.

- Tate Johnson and Avery Jernigan both got first-team reps tonight. "Both of those guys have come on and have done some positive things." Mentions Coffey is athletic and is much improved from where he was.

- On secondary: "We can move, now. The communication in the back end has been good." - Mentions Donovan Kaufman, Nehemiah and Jaylin helping out. Caleb Wooden will be a good player once he figures everything out.

That is it for Harsin
